Okay--we would be taking the 7 year old grandaughter--need to get her a passport---how near is good snorkeling from cancun?--also want to parasail(just me)---they are probably everywhere? I am not looking for wild night life---jest something for the grandaughter to have fun with us at--I think she would love snorkleing---I have looked on line and prices are varied---how $ are taxi's---busses?--I drove 10 days in Ireland but I think I will pass on Mexico---thanks for your input---Rod

Cancun is great, however there might be better options for your family. Also look into Cozumel and the Mayan Riviera. Cozumel is an island just SE of Cancun and the MR is the coast just South of Cancun. Both areas are a bit less crowded, less of a party scene, and probably better overall for a family. However, Cancun is great too, and you might find it cheaper. Regardless, that whole area is amazing. You won't believe how nice the sand is and how clear the water is. There are taxis that take you everywhere, no need to risk driving.

I have been looking at riveria mayan and cozumel as well---I thought the grandaughter might enjoy the dolphin swim thing also.

I say go with Cozumel/Riviera Maya area as well if your looking at snorkeling. Cozumel has 1 of 3 great barrier reefs in the world. While Cozumel is better known for scuba the snorkleing is great too. It's quieter than Cancun but still nice. I took the family to Riviera Maya in July. We stayed at the Occidental Grand Xcaret. We really enjoyed it. With a 7 year old I think it would be a nice fit. Some people complain because it doesn't have a true beach, but it has a man made lagoon cut into the coast. The kids snorkel right off the beach here and see some nice stuff. You can take a 10 minute cab ride to go to the big traditional mexico beach. It's an all inclusive thats kid friendly ith animals all over. Worth a look. There are nice parks (re:tourist) and the swimming with the dolphins thing. It was $$$ but we did it.
These pictures are of the lagoon and the beach in town

We went to Cancun for our honeymoon 12 years ago. Loved it. O have heard good things about the other places mentioned as well, though. Our snorkeling experience wasn't that great as Hurricane Mitch had decided to come for a visit during the time we were there and the water was too choppy for a really good snorkle trip. We took little flat bottom speed boats to the site and that was a blast. We had a great time and took taxi's or walked everywhere. Everyone was super grateful that you were there and really nice. Hated the street vendors always getting in your face, though. I guess they have to make a buck too.

We stayed at the Occidental Grand Xcaret twice. Its a great resort. We booked ours through apple vacations, and did the snorkeling trip that they can provide. They give you a life vest, snorkel, gogles, and fins. It was a 3 part trip that included snorkeling the coral (the fish there were beautiful), Fresh water cave swimming. I think they call it sinotes (sp?) The water was cold in the cave (58*) but the rock formation were out of this world. The third part was cliff diving. We did this in july a few years back, and the mosquitos were crazy around the cliff. But once you hit the water, they left you alone. Xcaret was neat because they had real Mayan ruins right at the resort. And the fish in the loby, love it when you feed them.

Here's a bad picture of the feeding frenzy with them. They also bring around exotic type animals every day for photo ops. The kids loved it. This is my youngest. I'd post the one with my wife but the monkey was a little grabby and if she saw it here she would kill me!
Did I mention, all inclusive with Modelo on tap!! :thu
