I've had two routers go bad on me within 3 weeks. The first non-wireless one was during a thunderstorm, and probably was hit by a voltage spike, although nothing else in the house was damaged. Last night during perfectly good weather and no power outages, the second router (located in a different place and wireless) went out, including the wired connections. No ports worked at all. This router was new as of Christmas last year.

When I bought a replacement router 3 weeks ago, I got a second one to put on the shelf as backup.

Don't they make sh!t last longer than 9 months nowadays?

Burning up the system looking for..........no, I won't say it.....lol

I gave up on routers for that very reason....went thru three in three weeks a few years ago.

I'm about ready to throw mine across the backyard. Throughout the day, it just decides to kill the internet connection, forcing a reboot to get it going again. Some days it works with no problems, others its multiple reboots a day.

I got a Chinese router...It is a bit heavy and bulky, but it does a nice job on the oak furniture I make!

I have Linksys WRT54G routers at my house and my mom's house. The one at her house is pretty old, but still working great. The one at my house is a new version, but also has some years on it and it works great, as well.

Doesn't help with routers that are just crapped out but if you have one acting flaky it's possible to flash it with an aftermarket operating system. I had a Dlink wireless router that acted goofy. Figured I had nothing to lose and flashed it. Worked great. Still does. We had the identical one at work so I swapped it for mine and flashed the other for home use. They both work better than ever. I even found one at a yard sale for next to nothing because it was "flaky". Flashed it and worked fine too. So I have a backup for mine or work on standby too.
If anybody cares to look into doing this on a router go to http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index
They have the OS's for all sorts of routers, not just DLinks. It's free. A version of their OS comes factory on Buffalo routers and Buffalos are good stuff.

Good router. I ran one for about 4 years. Only replaced it because cumcast gave me a new modem/router. Just set it out in the garage last night. Cover shipping and I'll send it to you.

You directing that to me, Sluggo? If so, I'll take you up on it. You'll also need to send me the admin username/password.

and here I was just about to offer a new Netgear and an older Linksys router for free. I don't remember the model #'s, but they both worked perfect.

I could use one since I was thinking about moving forward into the laptop world. But I dare not ask as you have been more than generous already.

Might be able to work something out.

Yes. PM me your address. I'll plug it in and see if I can reset it to factory defaults.

No disrespect intended Mid, but I'm glad I traded Dale for the wireless router!

Here I was expecting "green" peanuts and low and behold...the finished product arrived! Just in time for the Gator game tomorrow.

Thanks a lot Dale!

You are very Welcome. Hope they are as good as advertised.

Just throwing this out there...but maybe the surge caused a problem on the same outlet you are using? I mean like maybe it has too much voltage now and is cooking the routers. We left to go out to eat on a Saturday night many moons ago and there was a whopper thunderstorm. When we returned and walked into the house and flipped on the lights...man it was like looking at the sun! Very bright. I went to the shop and got the multimeter and checked the voltage into the house and it was about 140V. I started unplugging appliances and called the Power Co. and they came right out and verified indeed it was way too high. They replaced the transformer on their pole and all was good again. Sorry this was long but the only way I know to say what it could be. Maybe just one circuit you have is bad??? Heck I know little about 'lectricity...except it bites like hell if you touch it!

BTW, quit telling Randy to "Flash" stuff...he's already a dirty old man. He doesn't need to be running around the neighborhood Flashing! :chair
