Thread sealant options

What is out there on the market for sealing threads besides teflon tape and the white permatex thread sealant that one normally uses for water and oil temp sending units as well as other pipe fitting applications. Looking for something darker in color.

Check the local plumbing shop. Not sure of the brands but I think there is dark grey and black colored sealants. No matter what the color, just use in sparingly and clean up any excess.

I've never used it on a car application but, its like a charcoal color.

I use Rectorseal or Oatey teflon pipe thread sealant available at your local hardware store, but it is a white color. I clean the excess off so that no sealant is visible after installed. I don't trust teflon tape, just had bad luck with it.

I use Loctite 567 in the shop on high pressure hydraulic piping, as well as hydraulic fittings subject to vibration. On engines, I've found Permatex #2, which is dark, serves well as a thread sealant. One example would be sealing against coolant pressure on open rocker stud threads.

If you're talking about NPT fuel (gasoline/diesel) line fittings, as opposed to NG, CNG or LP fittings, try Loctite 569. For JIC/SAE, etc fittings, where a flare/compressive sleeve seals, a conventional vibration resistant threadlock is fine IME.

Ditto I've used in on the piston bolts on 3000 psi water pumps and it seals great. The factories who build these pumps also soak the brass fittings in loctite as well to prevent leaks from vibrations. I prefer the glue stick over the bottle. Cost a bit more but it'll last tenfold longer you won't have it leak in your toolbox. I've seen about a dozen sockets glued together from such a mishap. I just killed my second tube in 4 years putting my 73 together, and I used it weekly at work for three of those years. Can't tell you how many small tubes I've had dry up and get tossed before they began to mass market the gluestick style.

Loctite 567 or Permatex Aircraft grade sealer only on anything in contact with gasoline. Be carefull what you use on sending units that use the mount as the electrical ground. Never use teflon on those. I always use the Permatex Aircraft as the fitting will still make metal to metal contact and give you a good ground.

Permatex 2A, its dark brown in color. Looks just like the dope I used to use for screw pipe carrying steam. I use it on sensors and differential plugs with no problems.
