Tie rods

So the Stang went in for an alignment and the the inner and outer tie rods need to be replaced. Kind of figured they would.

The shop that I take it to wants to order Moog inner and outer tie rods and sleeves for $275. Does this seem like overkill?
Mustangs plus has a Grab a track kit for $170.
I don't mind getting the better parts if they are worth the expense, I just want to make sure I am not wasting Cash.

Also with the Granada spindles would I still get stock style Mustang tie rods for a 70?

Thanks

That's about double the price that Rock Auto would charge you for the Moog inner/outer tie rods and sleeves. You can save money by re-using the old sleeves. They are normally a non-wear part, unless they rust out.

I'd order the parts from Rock Auto, and supply them with the parts, or show them a print out from Rock Auto, to show them how bad they're trying to screw you.

Moog is about the best name in the business, and what I usually try to use, whenever I can. Never having done the Granada disks, I couldn't really tell you what tie rods you'd use.

Rock Auto is good for one thing, Getting part numbers and giving you a price to use against your local parts store. I tried Rock Auto once, they sent me the wrong parts (some moron couldnt match the numbers off the invoice to the numbers on the box). They told me I had to pay shipping for their mistake. I talked to supervisors, bosses, you name it. They wouldnt do a thing. I took the part numbers and price from the invoice to the local parts store and got the right parts for a better price. :fbomb Rock Auto!
Parts store have a pretty big mark up on parts, if you ask or have a better price from somewhere else, 9 outta 10 times they will match the price.

O'reilly's will sell you Moog stuff for cheap, and price match any local competitor. Keep in mind, the shop buys their parts from a parts store and marks them up. Those numbers aren't terrible when factoring in shop overhead. They need to make money too.

What I would do is go buy the parts yourself, install them, then take the car back to the alignment shop for an alignment.

+1

The shop I have it at doesn't add markup on parts. Called him this morning and had him cancel the order.
He was getting them from napa.

I am going to order the kit from opentracker with the roller idler arm while I am at it.

Around here, NAPA is usually the most expensive place to buy parts. Auto Zone is cheapest but doesn't have the Moog parts for the early Mustangs. Ordering from OpenTracker is your best option, especially with the roller idler arm.

I figured the roller idler arm was a good idea any way.

Should I go with the baer tie rods? I have lowered the car about 1 1/2".

Really depends on the intended use of the car. Baer parts are of great quality, but you'll pay more $ for them. Moog parts are probably all you'll need. I'd discuss it with John (OpenTracker), though. The guy KNOWS suspensions.

Thanks. I did send him a PM.
The car is just street use, mostly highway. I just thought the baer might be needed for helping the bumpsteer since I lowered it.

Our Napa stores carry their own line of Premium suspension parts and they suck. They cant get moog. Let John decide if you need anything different for bumpsteer, if not, go for the moogs, they make excellent parts. I dont know if you have Advance Auto Part stores where you are but they have them and usually have good prices.

We do have Advance auto here. I get most of my parts there. I will wait for John to give me his advice.

Napa does not carry Moog, they carry what they call Napa Chassis, which is rebranded Raybestos (iirc), and it is definitely not crap. Good quality parts, on par with Moog. They also carry what they call Master Ride Chassis, which is crap.

If the shop told you they aren't charging overhead in their parts, either they're lying or Napa is charging them too much for the parts. Those parts (in Napa Chassis) should cost the shop ~$180.

Keep in mind, you'll need outer tie rods to match the Granada spindles, unless you got the CSRP altered spindles.

So I ordered the parts from John. Wanted to get the roller idler arm anyway, might as well fall into the "while I'm at it" syndrome.

Now I have to wait another week to get the Stang on the road for the summer. :cry

FWIW, I really like my roller idler. Just remember to pay attention the wheel, as the return-to-center function of the steering may be decreased after the swap. Increased caster helps the problem.
