Timing cover re-seal

I am going to be doing a timing cover on a '67 -289. Does anybody have any advice on procedure and installation tips

I put a very thin coat of Right Stuff on the cover, attach gasket, install cover. I always try to check both surfaces beforehand and make sure they are clean, smooth and flat.

Craig to Craig, where do you live? What's the secret Craig handshake? Welcome to the fix and yes for using the Right stuff. It works on dentures too.

Plan on changing the oil as there will be collant that will fall into the pan, IIRC. Also, check the teeth on the timing chain gears and check the chain slack, if it's an original unit it may be time for another one. How old is the water pump? It may be time for another one since it'll be off.

I can't remember the trick, (it's been a long time since I had one off), but I thought you are supposed to install the damper before fully tightening the timing cover bolts, so as to reduce the potential for a leak thru the timing cover seal.

You mean , temporely install the balancer , so the timing cover can "sit" before any bolts are tighten ??
Beginning with tighten the upper bolts , remove the balancer and tighten the lower bolts ???

Yes, you do want to make sure it's lined up correctly before torquing the cover down.

Yes that is a good trick... my father's buddy who has been building Ford motors since Y-Blocks were new taught me that one... but he uses a damper spacer off of I forget what motor (maybe an FE) as it isn't a press fit...
