timing cover seal in backwards DOH!

Ok, after staying up one night to get some stuff done on the car I realize I convinced myself that the TC seal on my 289/333 went in the easy way with the spring facing out. I figured all the other seals (rear wheel, etc.) were tapped in from the solid side of the seal but didn't think about which way faced out when done.

I take it my only resolve is to remove the now sealed TC, tap the seal out, rent a seal tool and install a new one the right way? I just dread scraping the newly applied cover gasket and Permatex 1B sealent. And it looks so clean, no mess all over, no paint chipped ....ARRRGGGGHHHH!

Re: TC seal in backwards DOH!

Well the seal mounts from the backside (inside) of the TC so when you lay it on it's face to tap it in (the correct way) you are taping on the side of the seal that is open and only has a thin rim so it's hard to drive in w/o bending and the solid end can't flex (give) like the open end will to slide in easier. I didn'thave a seal driver so I used a pipe end close to the size of the flat side of the seal.

Re: TC seal in backwards DOH!

Doesn't the torque converter seal go into the transmission housing? Spring to the transmission side......

Re: TC seal in backwards DOH!

Sorry Pete, I should have spelled it out once at least, I'm referring to timing cover TC not torque converter. The spring is facing the radiator as it is now.
