Totally Worn Out and Ready For MBBIV !

Ponyman66

Yak, yak, yak
During the past few weeks I have barely had the strength to sit up and read the boards here. I certainly didn't have the energy to do ANYTHING to my car! The reason being I was going back through the police motor officer certification course at work. It is taxing not only physically, but mentally as well. Each day I came home totally worn out! I had been certified and rode 6 years ago. After leaving the department I work for and later returning, my certification had lapsed and I was unable to get reassigned to the traffic division. At the beginning of Aug I was finally reassigned there and several weeks ago I was advised a motorcycle certification class was being held. I was also told I would be attending. To make a long story short, as of this morning I once again received my police motorcycle officer certification and can once again proudly say I am a motorman!

FYI, Duane keeps sending me texts of him drinking beer on the beach. Go arrest that POS for me will ya?

Congrats on that.... I know how rough it can be. You have every right to be proud.

I taught Motorcycle Safety for 12 years and as a Chief Instructor last 10 years of instructing. This was for the military but thru the Motorcycle Safety Foundation guidelines from 1982 thru 1994. I did this as a military sideline plus teaching civilian classes throughout the west coast area.

While in Tucson, I got involved with the local motor officers training also. They used our advance course as a starter and then moved on to their courses. Since I was running the Motorcycle Safety Program on Davis Monthan AFB, myself and a couple other chief instructors got to attend the class with the officers. WOW....it was something else....both fun and rough. We did not do the written classroom, just the riding portion and the class room that went with that.

One aspect of life I really miss....riding and teaching those classes.

One word of advise...be careful at MBB IV. You don't want anything from there following you home.

Thanks a lot guys. I actually failed the mid term testing of this particular course back in 2004. It's the Maryland State Police course which is, arguably, one of the toughest of all the police motor courses. I later certified under an IPTM course, which is still no cake walk. I was very fortunate to have another crack at the one that beat me, and then finally kick it's butt!! If you've never seen the skills a police officer/deputy must master in order to ride, check out a law enforcement motorcycle rodeo (which is what the competitions are referred to as) in your area if you ever get a chance, or look up some videos on Youtube. The seemingly impossible things you see being done with the bikes are no "special" show skills. They're actually basic skills every motorman must master in order to just pass the course. A (very) few things like doing the courses while standing on the seat are for show, but even the skills to do that are all based on the basics. As Pete said, it's rough!

BTW, as worn out as I am, I just might be WITH Duane drinking beer on the beach! :thu

See ya tomorrow Ryan. I have my DD lined up and am ready to consume some nice cold adult beverages!!! :beer

Congratz dude !! :thu

Do you ride your bike all year round ?
What kind of wheather ( in the winter) do you have in your state ? :stu

Being a foreigner , not knowing what those courses are about , can you post a link of a youtube vid so I can see whats all about ? :confu

Hahaha, I just reread that, good catch! I won't be showing her this thread! :hide

Feel free to still show the pic Jon!

Well MBB IV is in the books now and those cold beverages went down mighty smooth! :beer

I sure needed the break too! We can ride year round here. Our department policy leaves the decision down to the officer to ride (for the most part). Extreme heat, cold or rain are usually the limiting factors. I rode a whole shift during the summer I was previously certified. The heat index was around 90 deg F and it was a HUGE mistake! The heat radiating off of the roadway, the bike and the ambient air temp had me knocking on the door of heat stress! I also did and escort for the king of Jordan. It was so cold I couldn't feel my hands! He was highly impressed with the escort he got and wanted to meet all of us. Prior to reboarding his plane to leave we all had to line up as he walked down the line of us shaking our hands and personally thanking us. We have had our bikes operated in heavy rain too......whenever the President or VP has been in town. I was really ticked off they had our motors operating in that. The Presidential motorcades haul a$$. I was really concerned about the safety of our guys, and rightly so. The following week the Prez went to Hawaii and had an escort in the same type of weather. A Honolulu PD motor officer wrecked and lost his life.

The videos Jon posted are good, the first one being the best (IMHO). The scraping sounds you hear are the foot boards on the pavement. They are one of the most commonly replaced placed parts due to getting worn away. The only "mods" done to the bikes are cutting the rubber fork stops out. The front end turns all the way against the frame and tightens the turning radius up.... a lot! This isn't done for "competitions", but for every bike for street use.

Thanks again everyone. SWMBO is totally ticked about the bike thing, but she'll get over over it! HEHEHEHE
