Toyota Prius question....

OKay the other day I'm sure you all heard was the guy in the run-away Prius in LA. He said he didn't put it Park because he was affraid it would flip. Wel besides that comment I then read that he couldn't put it in Neutral because these car's transmissions only have Park and Drive.

Which leads to the question how does one push this car, if needed, or tow it, if it doesn't have a neutral selector?

I've never driven one nor been close enough to inspect the mechanics of the car.

Any anwers?

My sister owns one...I'll ask if I get a chance.

I've never honestly paid any attention to the car the few times I've been some place where it was around.

The guy must not know much about his car. Here at work, I drive an '09 Prius. Throwing it in park won't do a darn thing. It's all electronic, and the computer won't let you. You have to be at an complete stop for park to work, I've tried. On the little shifter that's on dash that has five positions: Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Brake (down shift), and the rest position. It's easy to shift it into neutral or brake when driving...do this all the time.

I have had a few as rental cars, the shifter is like a video game joy stick. You just move it in a direction for the choice you want and it goes back to center. The Park button is to keep it from rolling when your done driving. They don't have a key really, just a gismo you plug into the dash. If you have ever driven an electric golf cart or fork lift you have basically driven a Prius, well sorta, golf carts and fork lift trucks are more fun!

the Honda Civic hybrid is much more "normal" but they are like the gas powered golf carts, when you stop at a light or stop sign, the engine shuts off, then when you hit the gas it starts up again, takes some getting used to. It reminded me of a car I owned a long time ago that wouldn't idle, always died when you stopped so you had to drive with two feet!

So the guy is a moron. :amaz

People need to learn about these machines they control....or rather don't.

On the Prius that I drive, you don't even have to plug that into the car. I put it in my pocket and it never leaves. There's an small RF transmitter, that you don't even need to press the button on it to unlock the doors. Just grab a handle and it unlocks. It doesn't have much range...if I have it in my pocket, it doesn't have the range for the passenger to unlock the door.

cool, I have had other rental cars like that. Never tried with the Prius's'

So if you throw it out of the car while driving, will it shut off? :craz

There are way too many morons, or as bugs would say maroons. Just this morning coming home from an errand I hear the screeching of brakes only to look to my left (on the other side of the freeway) to see an SUV acting like a pinball and then doing a roll over. I did the best that I could and used it as a teaching device to my daughter. Do not panic brake and suddenly turn the wheel. fd

No. But it'll never start again :)

I don't know what to believe about this situation any more.

I think the Prius guy from Cali has some kind of motive. Something don't jive with that whole story.

Any one who refuses to take responsibility for being an idiot can now claim "it was the car".

I'd say automakers are out smarting themselves with all the new gizmos. You shouldn't need to be re-trained every time you drive a different vehicle. IMHO

yep - a friend of mine has an '06 Cadillac CTS and it's got the same thing - don't have to put the key in anywhere.
