Transmission Install Questions

I removed my Toploader transmission and rebuilt it. I've resurfaced the flywheel and plan to install my new Centerforce II clutch this week with the rebuilt transmission. I've a few questions about the process.

1) Should I put a light layer of RTV on the block plate before installing it back on the motor?

2) I'm not positive of the orientation of the flywheel when I took it off. Is it place on in a particular orientation (offset weight opposite of harmonic balancer)?

3) I removed the flywheel bolts with a friend holding the motor from turning using a wrench on the bolt at the harmonic balancer. This does not seem like it will work for reinstalling as the front bolt would just come off. How to you keep the motor from turning while installing these bolts?

Thanks in advance for the help.

The flywheel can only be installed in one orientation. To tighten the bolts, apply a long breaker bar to the harmonic balancer bolt so that the bar hits the floor or the engine stand.

As Midlife said there is only one way to install the flywheel on the crankshaft, just keep rotating it until all the holes line up. Don't worry about RTV on the block plate, but make sure you use a sealer on the flywheel bolts!

I have two 4-5" long bolts that I cut the heads off of and screw them into the bellhousing whenever I am installing the trans. Its a huge help for guiding the input shaft into the clutch disc and pilot bearing.

Thanks for the quick responses. I suppose I would have noticed the flywheel can only be installed one way. I like to ask questions in advance so I don't run into problems on the only day I have to work on the car.

Do you use any special thread sealer? I planned to use Loc-Tite on the bolts. Would I use both?

I believe I used a sealer on my flywheel bolts instead of loc-tite, but I think it was made by loc-tite though.

Don't do what I did installing the flywheel. I placed the flywheel on the lip of the crank, and was rotating it around to find the correct orientation. I had my finger on the ring gear while doing this. my hand was at the bottom of the crank, and the flywheel came off the crank. Even thought the engine was almost sitting on the garage floor, the flywheel took a chunk out of the concrete, and I have two scars on the tip of my index finger (and lost some feeling in that finger) that ended up between the concrete and the ring gear. ouch!!

Thanks for the advice. I purchased some thread sealant at O'Reilly tonight and installed the flywheel. I then put on the new Centerforce II clutch and pressure plate kit. I should be able to reinstall the transmission this weekend and be back on the road. It has only been a couple of weeks but I'm ready to be driving again.
