Trim ring '67 steering wheel pad

Has anybody changed out the chrome plastic trim ring that fits the steering wheel center pad on a '67? If so, what technique did you use to get the new one on? I tried heating up the pad, spraying it with silicone lube, but the foam seems too hard to flex enough to get the new ring on. Before I break the new ring I thought I'd put out a call for help. Here's a pic of the ring installed at the widest part of the pad for those needing help visualizing.....

I have, and I believe I used soap on both the pad and the ring and yet I had to use alot of force. Actually I was surprised it didnt break
