TV Problems.....

Dammit. During the middle of the college/pro football season our "new" Sony TV crapped out. It's not really new, but it was when we bought it just 3.5 short years ago. After doing some internet troubleshooting, it turns out that there was a class action lawsuit against Sony for the TV and Sony extended the warranty on all effected TV's to correct the issue. Unfortunately for me, Sony never contacted me to have the problem addressed and the extended warranty period has now expired.

The good news: Alhough my TV is part of the recall, I'm not suffering from any effects of the reason for the recall. The problem with our TV is one of the cooling fans quit. It's at the local repair shop and should be back in the house within the next couple of weeks. Repair estimate is at $250.

The other good news: Doing the internet research to determine what was wrong with the TV, I learned of the class action lawsuit and when talking with Sony, stated that I DID have the problem identified in the lawsuit and I was PO'ed that because I'm now outside of the warranty period I am in effect "up the creek w/o a paddle". As a "valued" Sony customer, Sony is willing to sell me a new TV. Mighty nice of them is what I was initially thinking, but after looking at their offer, I think we're going to buy another TV.

Here are the three TV's that are part of their offer:

KDL52XBR9 @ $1325

KDL52V5100 @ $800

KDL46V5100 @ $450

We're going to buy the third choice, the 46" TV and put it in the other living room. The cost savings of their offer is the only reason we're buying another TV.... the price is just too low to not buy another one.

You do know that Circuit City is no longer around, right?

A brand new circuit city was built here maybe a year or so ago, but then it was renamed to "The City" now... a little more trendy I guess.

Not sure if it's a new entity, or just a name change or what...

Actually I forgot all about them going out of business Rick, thanks for reminding me.
Circuit City is still totally available for internet purchases only. Some guy bought the rights to the website and name, and is direct fulfilling all orders. No stores, just some warehouse somewhere.

Dave, I got an offer from sony for something similar some time ago. Except all the ones offered were second hand or refurbished. Did they mention anything like that?

Did they mention anything like that?

No, they didn't mention that, but then again, why would they? I need to call them tomorrow and you can bet your butt I'll be asking them that question.

I've got a 36" Toshiba picture tube television that will be 10 years old next month. I wouldn't mind buying a new TV, but I refuse to do so as long as this one is working properly. It's so heavy it literally takes two men to pick it up, and it's too big to fit in my son's bedroom so I can't even give it to him to justify a new one. This thing just won't die.

A hammer or a well place .38 will solve that problem :yikes

Dave, any word from them today? If they didn't mention it, i tend to think they are new. They flat out told me from the get go.

Yep, sorry guys. It's a done deal. The new KDL46V5100 will be shipped within the next couple of weeks. To my front door price was $484.60.

Holy crap, I hope the cops don't come for that steal, wtg Dave :toot

Don't forget that part of the deal involved the $3500 Sony TV (that I bought 3.5 years ago that has crapped out on me) and releasing Sony Corporation from any future litigation. I'm sure Sony Corp. looks upon the transaction as a "deal" also or they wouldn't have made the offer.

Something to consider though.....

If you happen to come across one of the Sony models associated with the class action lawsuit.... and the TV is available for REAL cheap.... like it's broken at a TV repair shop or at the dump.... and it still has it's serial number sticker affixed to the back of the TV (upon acceptance of the "deal", Sony requires you to send in the S/N tag)..... Anyone could claim the same thing I did and get the same deal.
