two issues: static using volumn knob on home stereo; stereo will not come on

I have a 30-year old (?) Yamaha CR-820 receiver being used in the garage that recently does not trip off (?) the internal circuit breaker (?). The unit turns on and the VU meters will read the signal strength but there is an internal breaker (?) that should click after a few seconds and allow power to the speakers. I've removed the cover and tapped what I think is the breaker unit but that has not helped. If I leave power on for hours, it eventually will trip and allow normal operation. Is this an easy fix? It was bought at a garage sale for cheap 10 years ago but I see them selling on ebay for $100-$200, it's a cool vintage receiver.

I have a 30-year old Pioneer receiver SX-3700 as a backup to replace the Yamaha but it has quite a bit of loud static when the volume knob is touched. How can this be fixed?

I need music in the garage.

Thanks.

The Yamaha sounds like it has cracked solder joints or leaking caps.

The pioneer has a dirty pot. Use some rubbing alcohol or board cleaner, give it a few spins, and try after it dries. If that don't work, might have to replace the pot.

OK, thanks for suggestions.

On the Yamaha, what is a "leaking cap?"

On the Pioneer, what is the "pot?" Do I need to take off the outer case & the volume knob?

Any help is appreciated.

I was wondering if you would know what those were. :shrug

I do.

Pot: potentiometer or variable resistor

Cap: Capacitor

Shoulda spelled those out. Force of habit using the short names after years of doing guitar electronics and circuit board repair.

On the pioneer, you'll need to get the knob off somehow. Most are just pressed on. Or, of you can open the case, and have access to the pot, you can clean it from there. It probably just has years of crud on the blades.

As for the Yamaha, if you open the case, you'll see what I'm talking about when I said leaking capacitors. They'll ooze and corrode when they're going bad. Also check all the tops of them. They swell up at the top before the leak. They should be flat.

Anything more than that, and you'll need an oscilloscope to check your voltages. Couldnt tell you how to do that. I haven't used a scope since college.

OK thanks for the info, I'll open both cabinets and give it a shot and may PM you for more info if needed. Thanks.

I've had luck just blowing compressed air on the volume control potentiometer... sometimes it's just dust collected in there.

I did this yesterday after removing the cover, it cleared up the issue 99%. Success.
