Video capture question

OK so the question was asked a while back about putting Home movies onto DVDs. I think what I want to do is a little easier. I have a Sony camcorder that records on to a Hi8 tape. What I did in the past was hook it up to a VHS recorder and make tapes, what...wait...what is a VHS? :shrug
So if I have a computer capable of burning a DVD would something as simple as this work? This converts and sends the signal to the computer over a USB. Or will I need some type of converter box and special hardware on my computer. Another option would be to buy another camcorder with some type of USB output. tia

Subscribing, I've got the same thing and am tired of hearing the wife b!tching about what I'm going to do with those old tapes! I hope it's this simple.
I also have a DVD/VHS player recorder that's supposed to copy VHS to DVD on one machine I picked up cheap but haven't tested it yet, at least that would clear out my old VHS's that will deteriorate.

Buy a dvd player/recorder and plug the camera with hi8 directly into the burner. It acts just like a vcr and is as simple. Hit play on the camera and record on the burner and you're done. Use dvd-r discs

My experience with USB for video capture is not great. I've used two different adapters, and finally went to a firewire adapter. Not sure USB can give you the best picture quality.

Does your camcorder have a USB or Firewire port on it?

Only RCA and S-video. I need to stop and best buy and look at stuff. Getting a DVD recorder would be easy, but I want the ability to edit.
