Vin # on 428 engine

I've got a friend interested in buying a 69 Mach I with a 428. Should the vin # be stamped on the block? If so, where. Is there anything else important to look for to see if this is the original engine for the car?

Casting number should be stamped on the side of the block.

Here is some info I was able to dig up.

"Engineering numbers that appear frequently during the CJ era include C6ME, C6ME-A, C7ME, C7ME-A, and C8ME, but beware -- these markings do not indicate a specific block whatsoever, since any FE or FT block of the period can be found with any of these numbers. The service part number for all 1966 - 1970 428 blocks is/was C6AZ-6010-F"

Most numbers are on block above the starter. Pretty hard to read if you have the starter in place.

Yes, a partial VIN should be stamped (not cast) on the engine block. I don't know where it should be on a 428, but you should look near the back top of the block where it wouldn't be covered by the intake manifold or heads.

I have a 69 mach with the 428 and it is on the upper left corner below the head on a flat spot. But if your block has been replaced you won't see it. Rich.

My 351W has only the last 6(I think) digits of the VIN stamped on a milled flat surface on the upper left hand side of the block. It was pretty nice to find.
