Washing machines!

guruatbol

Always on vacation!
Dang it, I had a unit that was a double hand me down that was over 30 years old when it went out, then we bought a new one and it lasted 13 years, now the one that replaced that one is barely 8 years old and has been worked on 5-6 times and now in the middle of a load when it comes to the rinse and the tub needs to drain and spin, it sits there and hums.

The cost of each unit went up exponentially too.

We have the Kenmore HE3 and as far as how it works, when it is working, it does a great job.

I don't even want to call the repair guy out. It will cost us a bunch of money.....

Sigh, I guess I am going to have to just take the darn thing apart and find the POS part that is failing!

I have things in my garage that are used more often that this POS and are 40 years old and work every time without flaw.

What ever happened to building things that last! There would be a lot less stuff in the landfills if things were either repairable or lasted like they did many years ago!

I just don't know it I can deal with this!!!!!!

Crappy appliances are my pet peeve. I swear they're engineered to fail in 7-9 yrs and high cost of replacement parts makes them obsolete. Whats' the environmental cost to manuf vs. replacement parts?

In the early 90's, my wife inherited a 70's Maytag dryer from her grandmother. A couple of times I replaced parts; drum belt, idler/tensioner arm, heat element. Whatever. I'd went to the neighborhood appliance parts store and for 10-20 bucks, fix it. Not anymore.

If you want it to last, don't buy anything with a brand name of Kenmore or Craftsman, Sears makes the worst crap in the world

I used to get used ones from laundry mats we managed. Would last for years. Industrial style don't have all the pretty settings but will go forever in a home type use.

Bunny you are right. I just have to convince Amber.

DEL - I had a made in the 50s dryer for ten years and only had to replace the automotive V belt on the drive motor. It had a piece of metal stock screwed above the door that would swing down to keep the door closed. It had two modes, on and off.

I only replaced it because we bought a new washer with a matching dryer.

I bailed the water out of the washer after I removed the clothes and unplugged it for 30 minutes and restarted it without clothes and it is running fine.

Next to try washing the clothes again.

I've had good luck fixing them myself. There's an excellent forum to find out info on you appliances.

Well, it seems to be working fine now.

I will however start saving for a new one.

Wife most likely set that up so you would do the laundry now to see how the machine works.....

I get on appliance forums when this happens and see what the common causes are. Our agitator wasn't turning a few months back, and it turns out there's some plastic paws in there that engage the gear in the agitator, was about $10-15 to fix. I've changed out a belt on the dryer and a timer and then when the dryer stopped again I called it quits and bought a new one (also a few months ago). Next time the washer goes out I'm tossing that too. I think we are at around year 8 or 9 for the washer. Old set was Estate by Whirlpool, new set is Whirlpool too.

My washing machine is 12yrs old. Bought it from Sears. Haven't had one problem with it in all these years. :shrug I keep hoping it will crap out so I can get a new one, but no luck.

We bought our washer, dryer and Fridge from Sears in 2001. When we moved from the town house to a "real" house we had to leave all the smaller appliances and get new ones.

They are still running fine (knock on wood) but I have had to replace the heating element in the dryer a few times through the years.

When our fridge stops it's cooling cycle it makes a funky clunk kind of noise and I keep thinking it's going to die one of these days but it's been making that sound for a long time when it cuts off so who knows.

IME, add GE to that list. Brand new GE appliances in our new house, and all four died beyond repair within 6 years.

By contrast, I just repaired our 40+ year old Whirlpool dryer, the 10 year old Whirlpool refrig is flawless to date. I have had to work on the 9 year old Whirlpool washer once for a broken coupling, but the wife unit seems to overload the dang thing, so I forgive it.

My washing machine and dryer are both Kenmore, 12yrs old. They have been moved mulipile times from san diego, to ft worth (3 different houses in FtW), to North Carolina to Buffalo TX and then to Bryan TX (2 different houses) and still work as good as the day Sears delivered them. So I ask.. WTF are you guys doing to abuse your stuff to make it crap out? LOL

Please do tell because I wish mine would die so I could get new ones!!

I have had great fortune with my appliances, except for the GE products. GE = crap.
I had a used kenmore washer n dryer and the washer ran for 18 years and the tranny finally rotted out (seal leak). The dryer ran another 5 n I sold it for 75 when the 5 year old GE POS failed. I now have a whirlpool duet washer n dryer that are amazing.
I also had a GE fridge die at the age of 7. A kitchenaid (whirlpool) sits there.

How many years are you expecting to get?

According to the IRS, five years (527 depreciation schedule). I'd bet my next paycheck the folks that wrote that document expects thiers to last longer.

For me, a $1500+ refrig better go more than 7 years. The GE didn't, the Whirpool did (and so are it's counterparts).

Edit: According to the link below, the average standard refrig lasts 14 years, and the low end should be at least 10 years.

How many years do I expect to get out of a fridge? 15 - 20. The compressor died which is unfathomable.

Frig and dishwasher are Kitchenaid and I love them. The DW is new in 06 but the frig was moved from Brawley and it is now about 13 years old or more. It is going strong, just some cosmetic things with the plastic interior parts.

We run about four loads a week in our HE3 Kenmore and it is starting to make noise when it spins. the error the other day is odd. After I drained the tub manually and ran an empty cycle it worked fine. Still makes noise, so I will be saving money for a new one.

the Sears repair guy told us a few years back when he was out to fix it under warranty that it was having issues because it was moved improperly and we should have had Sears do it for us. WTF? How do you move a washer improperly? We unhooked it and lifted it on to a dolly and wheeled it up the ramp in to the moving truck where it sat for two days and then it was moved into the house and hooked back up. I leveled it and it worked perfectly.

He said it got jarred around too much. WTF? It was in a moving truck and it was packed very tight!

Sigh.....

It looks like Whirlpool is the one to get then. One of the third party rating services rated one of the GEs #1 and the Kenmore #2....Hummm???

Mel

My bet on his comment about moving it improperly is that when we bought outs it has securing bolts that secured the drum so it would not move during handling or transport.
I have a comsumer reports issue on DW n I will look for it when I get home next week.
