We had to put down one of our cats

Well we had a sad day. Muffin, one of our cats, was sick and my wife took him to the vet on Monday.
After lots of tests they found his chest was filled with fluid and he couldn't breath well. All signs pointed to cancer so she made the hard decision to put him down. He stopped eating and wouldn't come out of the basement. When they weighed him he was down to 14 pounds, he lost about 10 pounds.

He was 11 years old and my wife rescued him from a barn when he was only few weeks old and raised him and his 2 brothers. Some of you might remember my dad's cat that we had put down in the fall, they were brothers.
The vet probably thinks we are awful. 2 cats put down in less than a year.

This is the most recent picture of him. he jumped in the babies playpen to take a nap.

Having had many cats in our family and our current feline inventory is 3, I know exactly what you are feeling like. It is painful but keep in mind your cat is now resting peacefully with no pain.

Had to put down my cat at 18 yrs old. Wasn't easy, but right thing to do, as it was in your case also.

BTW, I worked for a vet. Vets see this all the time, it's the folks that drag it out while the animal is sufferring horribly that they wonder about.

Thanks guys. We knew it wad the right thing. It would have killed my wife to think he was suffering to long. These cats were like her children since we didnt have any at the time.

I have 3 cats also...
Anyway, yes they are part of the family and it's hard. I feel for you guys. so sorry

bummer - by the way, you never own a cat....... Dogs yes. Cats, no.

Sorry to hear the sad news. The end of life for our pets can be so hard. That's one of the reasons Deb and I decided to be puppy raisers for Canine Companions. We get to see the other end of life for a change!

Sorry to hear this Pat. I know it's a difficult thing. We had a cat for 18 years (before we even had kids we got it). She passed away a little over 2 years ago while we were at work. I also had to have two dogs put down due to illness. It's never easy, but move on and remember the fun (and funny) times.

4 cats here, VERY sorry for your loss. I feel your pain. YOu did the right thing for Muffin. They become part of your family and its tough letting them go. I'd like to share Jakes story if I may. I never liked cats but my wife insisted when we got togehter and I reluctantly gave in.

We got him as a tiny kitten that wasn't much larger than your hand. He grew up quickly and as it turned out the cat and I got along better than he did with her. Jake became my cat. He was a man's cat, very independent and challenging. He would come when I would call him (he wouldnt come to my wife) He had a little teddy bear he would carry around but he didnt want you to see him with it. Anytime he got spotted with it, he would drop the bear immediately.

During a yearly exam Jake tested positive for feline leukemia. He had no signs for over a year and we hoped it was remissive but it attacked his immune system. It started with a tooth infection that antibiotics had no affect on. It morphed into a mass that grew large enough that it began to displace his lower jaw. He couldnt clean himself, he could barely eat and was losing weight. I knew what needed to be done but I was in denial. I couldn't do it so my wife took him to the vet. We buried him with his bear.

RIP Jake. We miss you

Thanks everybody. And thanks for sharing jakes story mike.

Muffins story was similar. He was so small when got him I could hold him and one of his brothers in the palm of my hand. I am not a cat person. When I married a cat person I knew I was in trouble. One day at her aunts farm she was shown a litter of kittens in the barn that were abandoned by there mother. 6 kittens total about 2 weeks old. 2 died the day we were there. My wife insisted we must save the other 4. So we loaded them in a laundry basket and into the car. One more passed before we made it home. We buried him in our backyard. The remaining 3 were very small and we were not sure they would make it. My wife bottle feed them and saved them.
11 years and now they are giants. All 3 were close to 25 pounds.

Here is the last remaining cat from the litter. Joey.

And yesterday alaina and I bought my wife this for the garden and we are going to attach his tags to it.

Pat it's almost funny you posted in your last reply you aren't a cat person. The funny thing is, neither am I! I didn't think it appropriate to mention it initially, but I know even better how you feel! With our cat that was 18, I was the one she got along with the best! I told my wife when we got married, "NO cats!". When I went away for a month to attend a training school the cat was waiting for me when I got home. She was so small I could carry her in my shirt pocket. We'd keep her in the bathroom while we were at work an she could squeeze under the bathroom door and get out! Friends thought it was amusing in the fact I could run my hand under the covers on our water bed and the cat would chase it. She'd never use her claws so no holes in the bed...ever! When they got a cat my friend figured he could do the same thing. Wrong! Their cat made a pin cushion out of their bed! LOL I was also the only person ours would take food directly from. That cat would eat ANYTHING I fed her. Ever seen a cat eat a pickle?! LOL

Those are the times I keep in mind when I think about ours, many many years of great fun and memories. I guess even when we're not "cat people", they make that choice for us! :)

p.s. Our cat was also a saved stray. Momma cat had them in the engine bay of a truck in our apartment complex parking lot. Dunno how long they lived there, but at one point our cat's tail got chopped off by the fan. She was kinda funny looking, a calico with a bobbed tail!

That's kind of funny. When i was younger my sister came home from California with her cats and we inherited them. One was a calico with a bobbed tail too. Same story. She got it cut off sleeping in a car engine and my sister rescued her.

I am a cat person. I like dogs too but they are too needy. Cats, well you know, they don't need us.
Anyway, All three of ours are rescued. The granddaddy is "Rat Rod" he had been in the paper. My wife and went and checked him out and he had a huge injury that made him look hideous. I told my wife no one would take him so we better. He healed up but still has eye trouble. He got his name because he looked pretty ratty. We have another cat that three kids came up to us at a flea market and said they had to get rid of it so we took it. His name is "Bob"
The final cat was part of a litter that all died. He lived but is a bit of a runt. My son named him "Master Chief" He is not running on all 8 cylinder, he's a couple nuggets short of a happy meal, not the sharpest knife in the drawer... awe heck I'll just say it. He is a bit of a retard. But we all love him just the same!
They are as much a part of the family as anybody and we would be torn up if anything happens to them!
Sorry for your loss.
