Welders, what would you do?

One of the guides on the Salmon slayer's favorite Salmon rod broke on Saturday after bringing in 5 fish.

I was thinking oxy/ace with a fine tip but worry about the heat transferring down to the glass rod. Instead a quick zap with Mr. Miggy? which wouldn't generate near the heat but would leave a much bigger weld spot. Or tell her to throw the rod away? Yeah right! or tell her to simply quit fishing?

Mig it. MAKE SURE to cut the end of the wire before you try. it's only going to take a quickie.

Is that stainless? Your going to get crap for weld if you use your standard mild steel setup & gas.

Have someone hit that with a quick tig.

looks to me like it was silver soldered on. have any plumber friends?? stainless, depending on the grade, will weld fine with a mig, you just wont have the corrosion resistance with the weld & will need to put something on it to keep it from rusting. a little clear nail polish after wire brushing will do.

+1 to Sellersrodshop...

It looks like solder or braze to me. I'd clamp a couple of visegrips to the lower loops on both sides of the rod to act as massive heat sinks and then with a small tip, reflow it with the Oxy Acetyline.

Or you could try some modeling putty around it where your not welding. The putty absorbs the heat. I surrounded a weld on a friends quaterpanel with it and made several straight line butt welds with little or no warp.

Home Depot sells this stuff but I've never used it or even heard of it before.

Yes, I know that replacing the guide might be an option since I use to build fly rods many years ago as a hobby. If I do go this way, I'll have our local rod shop do it for I have given away all my rod building equipment.

I called a friend who has friend locally who does tig welding and for 20 bucks and some smoke salmon he tigged it back in place. Had problems with the guide wire support springing out away from the loop so I told him to build up on the outside. Nothing pretty but it will do the job. Will apply some clear over it to help reduce corrosion, rust, herpes, etc.

For a quick turn, i'm very happy.

Glad you took my advice. You will get my consulting bill in the mail. :)

Make absolutely sure there is not a imperfection in the area the line might touch--needs to be polished smooth---the wife would cut you if she lost the "big" one cause of this.
