I'm in Brazil for a couple of weeks and have been coming as many as 4 times a year since 97. Today the engineer I have been working with at a customer site asked me if I would come to a class he teaches. He volunteers to teach English for his Church. He speaks well enough that I can understand him and he has had formal training but it's still broken English and with a heavy accent. I speak enough Portuguese to get into trouble but I get by. He wanted me to practice speaking in conversation with his class so they could hear an American speak in the native tongue. I said sure so I went to eat near the hotel and he called me and asked if he could pick me up. So I went tonight for about a half an hour. They were poor people in a small village but very very friendly. Some were old, some teens and some children. They all were excited but the little girls (no perversion here please cuz they were LITTLE) were following me like a puppy and when it was time to go they followed me out of the building. It was a really cool experience. I told the guy I had fun and was glad to have had the experience. I only speak what little I pick up when I travel and not all of it could be repeated in a Church. He asked if we could set up a Skype account and would I speak with his class from time to time, I said yes and I think it will be fun. I may even learn proper Portuguese.
