What a CRAPPY day!

Ponyman66

Yak, yak, yak
Wow, I was on a roll for the 2nd day in a row working on the coupe. Great day..or so I thought! Before I went outside my son called me up asking to borrow my truck. He said he wanted to go to my mom's and help her pick up her new washing machine. No problem, come by and get it. When he got to my house I told him, whatever you do DON'T wreck it! The only other time he used it was to move into his house. While backing up he bumped the receiver hitch cover, cracking it (it was just plastic, no big deal). Having had a problem before I figured I had no worries, he'd be EXTRA careful this time. After working on my Mustang for several hours I thought it a little strange he wasn't back yet. No problem, his grandmother probably had him helping with a few other things.

A little while later I thought I heard someone pull up to my house. I was just fitting a patch to the roof of my coupe when in walks his fiance. NOT a good thing! She told me my son asked her to come by and get me. OH SH%T! She told me there had been an incident with my truck at my mom's house. I rode down with her and walked into my mom's backyard. There was my truck parked halfway inside the rear gate. I noticed the right side was REALLY close to the gate for the fence. When I walked up low and behold, there was a deep gouge down the bedside and the rear passenger door (my truck is an F150 supercab). The right rear tire was also flat. It seems that after dropping off the new washing machine my mom wanted him to take the old one and some other stuff to the landfill. WHY in the world he had gone into the backyard is beyond me. It woulda been closer through the front gate. With both gates open though it's a 12 foot wide opening! He cut it close to the fence while pulling out and turning to the right. He didn't bother to watch the right side. The bolts for the gate hinges stick out about 6" on the upper and lower hinges (thanks to my mom's idiot ex-boyfriend!). The upper bolt got the side of the truck and the lower one got the sidewall of the tire, tearing it open. :rant

Needless to say, I was PI$$ED!! Then my mom started making excuses for my son which ticked me off more. I told them to just go away and leave me alone. I then changed the tire by myself (so I could burn off the desire to knock the crap out of something or someone!). I told my son to get in his fiance's car and follow up to help unload the truck. I was severely torqued for quit a few hours. While the damage to the side of my truck was enough to make me angry, the tire was the BIG kicker! I had just bought tires for the truck in Feb. Due the fact I put very few miles on it, the tire had less than 2000 miles on them. They were also some expensive Michelins and what's worse, they were the last ones anyone could locate in the U.S. for that size and model. They were Cross Terrains and Michelin has discontinued them!

I really wanted another set when I needed tires. The last set gave me over 90k and they had just gotten down to the wear bars! The wife went to get them for me, but knowing they were discontinued I had said to get the replacement model. She called me from the store and said if I wanted the Cross Terrains, the store could get me a full set (two came from Texas and the other two had to come from Alaska.....I kid you not!). I'm keeping my fingers crossed they can find me just one more, though I'm not holding out any hope. I also have to get with one of my close friends who works at a body shop to see about helping me out with the body damage.

I said very little to my son during and after the whole thing. He was also smart enough to stay away from me. He did apologize before leaving my house. I also told him he would NEVER borrow my truck again! I did call him several hours later to tell him not to dwell on it. What's done is done, it can't be UN-done! I also know he's not in any position to pay for anything right now having just bought his house several months back. The wife let me vent for a few hours and that helped me out. I guess this little rant also helps. Kids..whata ya gonna do with them?!!!

BTW, needless to say I didn't get anything else done to my car today. As ticked off as I was, I was afraid I'd lose my patience and screw something up, further ruining my day!!

bummer dude, so sorry to hear this. At least he was doing a good deed rather than just screwing around. Good luck

John, my blood pressure went up just reading that. A couple months ago my wife backed her '09 Mustang into my 'looks new' '01 British Racing Green Miata, they met rear fender to rear fender. I didn't hear it as I was cutting grass but saw how close the cars were and ran up but only after she managed to pull forward doing more damage of course, if she'd of waited 10 seconds I could have pushed them apart first. She was yakkin' with her sister who was in the pass. seat not paying attention and I had just 15 min. prior told her to just take the Miata and she refused.

She did more damage to the Mustang fender than my Miata, a little compound and you can't tell. Her car will need the body shop... Guess what, if I blew off on her I would get it back 10 fold so I threw the mower around for a while and went back in the garage with a 6 pack...

As Craig mentioned, at least he wasn't screwin' around when he damaged the truck. Does he understand that objects get closer to the rear as you turn? As in you might not hit a close curb with your right front tire but the rear will? He needs to leave more distance, especially between his head and the back of your hand.

Relax and look at the big picture, he was doing something for your mom, not a lot of todays youth would not even bother, he wasn't drunk while doing it, it wasn't an accident that didn't hurt anyone physically, the truck can be repaired, (might not be able to get the exact tire) think of how this post might have read if he was in a bad accident and you might never see him again or he was impaired for life, it could always have been worse. That was nice to call him and say don't sweat it. I have a short fuse but I have gotten better after a couple of near death escapes in the last couple of years. This might not seem minor now but in the big picture it really is. This is just one of lifes trials. someday you might even share a laugh with him over it!

:stu...er...well said....except that last part about laughing about it later. :confu

I understand about not getting any more done on the coupe. Many times I quit working on my coupe in fear that my fuse was already too short from something else that got me mad.

My solution is usually to take a nap, but then again I'm old.

sorry to hear about the misfortune.

This is lesson you son will live with for the rest of his life. I'ts called the school of hard knocks and most of us learn best from these lessons.

In the end, forgetaboutit.

Others are right - the fact that your son helped his grandmother is what's important, and you should be proud of that.

Thanks everyone. A bunch of folks here have met my son in person through the years at MBB. He is indeed a good kid...now an adult, but still my kid! My biggest issue was his carelessness. I was indeed kinda blinded at the moment to the fact he was helping out his grandmother. He's always gone out his way to help others. We'll work it out later on down the road.

The bad news is, so far no luck in locating another tire (which didn't surprise me..sighhh). If anyone knows where I can pick up a Michelin Cross Terrain P275/60-17, I'd greatly appreciate a line on one!

Thanks a bunch Jon. We'll give them a call tomorrow. The wife called a bunch of places today that had them listed on their sites. They were no longer in stock though. I'll have her try these two tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

No luck at either place Jon. The wife called today for me. She said one them told her he had four in stock in the warehouse, but when he physically checked....zero on hand! Still lookin'!!!

Ahhhh...I gave it the old google try! Somewhere there's one of those tires sitting in a little tire shop and the owner is using it as a stool to sit and eat his donuts...
Jon

Absolutely! Thanks for the tip though, it was close on one of them! I'll just keep looking for a little longer. Maybe something will turn up. BTW, I HATE mixing tires on my vehicles. I'm just really REALLY anal about things like that...especially when it comes to my truck or my Mustangs!

Just FYI, I bought a used tire on eBay (not from this seller) and it didn't even last a day. Won't be doing that again. I did get a full refund, though. :thu

I GREATLY appreciate the help from all of you. Believe it or not Ryan, my wife checked the night of the accident and found that very posting. I hadn't thought about Ebay at the time due to being so ticked off. I marked that tire on my watch list the night the wife found it and have seriously thought of getting the Ebay tire as a replacement spare. I'm VERY leery of a used tire as a primary tire (as Frank pointed out).

I've always been taught that if you reverse the direction (e.g. swapping them to the opposite side of the car), you run the risk of the belts separating and a tire failure. Bias ply tires used to be swapped in a "X" pattern on the car, to include the spare, when you rotated tires. Radials are just moved form the front to the rear. keeping them on the same side of the car they were originally to maintain the same direction of rotation. Not knowing what the original rotational direction a used tire just causes me some concern.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, at least for another week or so. The truck goes to the body shop on Monday for an estimate and to schedule the work. I'll hold out at least until I get it back. Thanks again everyone and please continue to keep your eyes open for me!

A quick update about my truck. After a doctor's appointment this morning we took the truck to the body shop for the estimate. Due to the type of damage to the bedside they're going to have to skin it. When the bolt gouged the side of it the damage was pretty deep (just short of penetrating the skin). It stretched it inward so much that a surface repair wasn't feasible. Total bill (including cost of the tire)..$2700! I'll be dropping if off next Monday. It'll just be nice when this is all over.

p.s. As a parting "shot", my wife drove to the shop and back. Due the procedure at the doctor's, it wasn't good for me to drive, just ride. On the way home from the body shop a truck ahead of us knocked a plastic construction barrel into the roadway ahead of us and she hit it. Fortunately it just caught the outside corner of the front spoiler. It left a little scuff mark but nothing more. Guess what? From now on, NOBODY is driving my truck from now on but ME!!!! :rant

That has ALWAYS been my practice when it comes to one of my vehicles. We have "family" cars for the wife and kids to drive. Nobody, no matter how good a driver, or well intentioned, will ever take as much care as you would behind the wheel. I have never let anyone in my family drive any of my mustangs for the simple reason I would miss them if they were to ever scratch it or something.

This past Sunday I approached the wife saying that I had a "honey do" chore for her. "Please take Red out for a good spin, while I haul stuff in my truck".

I have total confidence in the wife driving either Mustang or my Chebbie truck. Since my daughter and son have very little if any experience with a stick, they only get to drive Red. If they get one of the rigs scratched or in an accident, I worry more for them to come away not hurt. The rigs can always get fixed.
