What do you use?

I want to pick up a carb spacer, but I'm not sure how to determine how much room I have. My thought was to go to the dollar store and pick up some kids silly putty, play dough or something and set it on top of the air cleaner to see how much space I have.

Are there any other tried and true methods to determine clearance?

You already said it, Playdough / clay! It works great for checking hood clearances, valve to piston clearances and lots more.

A beer can ? :lol :lol :craz :craz

No.. , some sort of clay is the best method i think too.

On top of the clay you lay a plastic foil so it can't stick to the hood.

Although a beer can isn't a bad idea , if the paint isn't an obsticle.!!

Like other have mentioned use the clay or the like. I know that with a one inch spacer, and my kind of tall filter element, im through the hood by about 1/2 inch. Which means i need a taller intake. :pbj

AND a bigger scoop!

Clay/Playdo or if you have the radiator and fan out of the car you can crawl in there and feel the clearance. You'd probably prefer the Clay method :lol
