On my way to California, my Garmin Nuvi 760 died on me today. It's four years old, so maybe it's planne obsolesence. I can turn it on, and it will give me my next turn, and then it dies, most of the time in midsentence. Unless it's plugged in, it dies almost immediately on battery power. I have a chance to shop tomorrow, so what are your recommendations for a new model?

Stay with Garmin....I have not looked at the newer ones as I have two of the 750/760 styles.

Some friends here got the newest one from Garmin that you can speak to input info. Says it worked great out to Utah and back.

Save the 760....Garmin will possible rebuild or replace with newer unit for $100 from my past experiences....then you have a spare. Check their website for that.

Are you a member of Costco? If yes go in there and get yourself a Garmin. Another plus with Costco is that they will warranty it.

I have had 4 GPS receivers. The best one (regarding accuracy) was a Garmin Pilot III+ that I found in a supermarket parking lot.

It brokw and then I bought a Motorola gps that was $39.00 at Fry's. That only had continental maps, so last month I bought a Tom Tom and a Western Europe map for our trip to London and Paris.

I must say the maps on the new ones are great. Given that, I'd not spend over 150.00 for one.

I'm a member, but don't have my card with me. I want to have the GPS so I can find the show. LOL

No probem if you don't have the card, just check-in at the customer service counter. Since you have access to the web, plan a route with Mapquest, Google Maps, etc.

I have used several apps on my IPhone, even AT&T which was a monthly charge but the Garmin is so much better. I don't know what model I have but I got it a radio shack for about $120

I had a garmin 660 for 5 years till it died and i replaced it with a Garmin 3790.
Couldnt be happier, especially with the trip planner where i can put a route in with 10 stops and it simply tells me the way.
I loaded OZ, New Zealand and Europe maps on it and have USA maps that i can put on after i remove Europe.

Laurie:

I'm currently using a droid razr maxx phone as a gps. The GPS application comes with the phone, uses Google maps, and works great. I previously had a Garmin purchased through Costco's web site and when it started getting buggy after a few years, I returned it under their "satisfaction" guarantee and was refunded the full purchase price. The nice thing about the droid is that the maps are automatically updated so no need to buy updates every year or so.

I'm headed out shortly to a Best Buy for a Garmin 2455MLT. The price isn't bad and it has maps of Mexico, which is a big plus for me. I went on Costco's website and they don't show it, so Best Buy seems to have the best selection around here. I can get maps on my phone, but I really prefer a Garmin when I'm trailering.

Deb uses a Garmin for directions (not sure of model), but when it fails her, she calls MarkStar!

We've had our garmin for a long time and other than the outdated maps it has worked great for us. We are looking at a new one soon only because its cheaper to buy a new one with lifetime updates than to update our old one. My wifes jeep has a factory nav system and we never use it. The garmin is just so much easier and user friendly.

Well, we had a heck of a time finding the Garmin here. All the stores were out of the model I wanted, but I finally found a Garmin 2595 at Target and got it. Concord, here I come!

Laurie, the best GPS is one with up to date maps!

Brand does not matter as long as the maps are correct. My TomTom is more like a DumbDumb because the maps are 5 years old! So many roads that are not there!!!!
