When it rains it pours....

I've had a LOT of superfluous crap going on lately. Between work, yard work, clearing this new piece of property and the everyday drone of normal activities, I've not been able to catch my breath. It' looks like this weekend I'll finally be somewhat caught up on everything.

Yesterday evening, after dropping my wife off at the local airport (she's flying down into Mexico for her Grand-dads funeral) I came home and found my son following my orders to move his FB to the left side of the shop and to park mine on the right side in front of the garage door. He's been driving his regularly and I haven't had much of a chance to drive mine at all, so I gave him the prime spot in front of the door. In order to get mine out, he'd have to get his out first. Since he'll be in LA for the next 3 weeks, I told him to swap the positioning of the cars in case I wanted to take mine out on a quick little jaunt. When I arrived home, both FB's were parked outside. I figured I'd take mine out for a quick spin of the tires. My son chimed in that he had to run an errand in the next county over and we should go for a cruise. I wasn't thrilled about a 50 mile roundtrip, tried to talk him out of it because it looked like the skies were going to unload on us any second, but in the end WTF, sure, lets go. He jumped in his '68 and we headed off down the road. About 3/4 of the way there, we got seperated at a light and I lost him behind me in traffic. I continued on and sure enough it was only a couple minutes before I saw him coming up quickly behind me. I was doing 65, he must have been closer to triple digits at this rate of closure.

So he pulls up alongside and asks me if I hear any funny noise coming from his car? I couldn't really tell. Both cars have side exit exhaust, so it's not very quiet listening for any odd sounds while going 65MPH down the road with the windows open. I gave him the "sounds good to me" signal and we continued on. When we arrived, I missed a turn and he was parked before me. After circling the parking lot I found him parked with his hood up. As I walked nearer I could definitely hear that something wasn't right.... sounds like a collapsed lifter on his #2 cylinder creating a medium sized "ticking" noise. I told him to shut the car off and to baby her on the way home. On the way home, I didn't get 100 yards before he disappeared from my rearview mirror. I gave him a quick call to find out he'd pulled over due to ZERO oil pressure. After doubling back and talking to him I asked at what point he lost oil pressure. He "wasn't sure" as he rarely looks at his gauges. Great answer.

Maybe after he returns from LA and we get the motor out, torn down, all of the damaged parts replaced and everything back running again he'll understand that the gauges are there for a reason.

At 4:15 this AM he calls me to inform me that on his way to the airport in his '57 F100, the headlights went inop and the stereo quit on him. He had to drive back blind and quickly jump in one of my cars to get to the airport on time. Sounds like an over burdened ALT to me.

So it looks like I have 3 weeks to finish catching up on my stuff before he returns and we have to tear into his vehicles. He hasn't grasped the whole concept of "these toys WILL cost you money long after you've finished buying/building them". He was pissed about the $85 tow bill.... I can't wait til he sees machine shop prices/labor rates.

Sure it sucks. But Father Son wrenching time is priceless. I love it when my Dad and I get to tinker together. But he's over an hour away and we don't get that opportinuty that often.

Well...... from the fathers prospective, I love it when nothings broke and I can come home from work and eat dinner sometime before 11PM.

Well, tinkering for us rarily has a deadline, it's more of a leisurely thing. I can 100% see your point on this one Dave.

So why not limit it to weekends, it's not his DD - correct?

Good question. No, it's not his DD. The F100 with the under-rated alternator problem is though.

Weekends are when I try to get MY stuff done, usually before noon so that we can either head off to the beach or take the boat out. The weekends are usually MORE busy than during the work week.

I think the easiest thing for me to do is just quit my job and sit in the shop all day fixing stuff and tending to the usual "yard-boy" chores.

It is fun............ :bow :pep :toot

I've got about 10 more years before I can even think about it.... kids... so much fun to make, but 18-22 years until they're on their own is such a LONG time!

I think it is about time for you to edumacate your son about reading gauges regularly. I highly recommend the aluminum bat with small holes in each end...

Eat diner before you start working on the car. :hmm

Just messing with you, I can relate though. Sometimes thanks to my kids and a wife that seems unwilling or unable to "deal with them" on her own I often don't get out to the garage till 9 p.m. or later.

On the plus, now that my kiddos are getting a little older (they turn 8 on the 15th) I can often work on stuff in the early evening or on weekends because they can now keep themselves busy playing in the yard. Every once in a blue moon they actually "help" me with stuff...they try anyway, I think it is more like hinder sometimes.

Sorry to hear about the problems...sort of sucks but guess it comes with the territory.

Updates.....

While I assumed that his headlights were cutting out due to an overloaded system, come to find out it was only his low beams that were inop. They weren't "cutting out" on him, they simply weren't working. Five minutes with a test light found a lightly corroded bullet connector up near the radiator support. I replaced the connector and the lights/truck is fixed.

We then moved over to his "zero oil pressure" Ecar. I popped the distributor expecting to find a bad oil pump driveshaft, but nope, all was well. Popped the passenger side valve cover and using my high speed drill ran the pumps driveshaft and nothing, no oil circulating at all. I instructed my son to remove the front crossmember and oil pan while I was at work this morning. I was hoping that the oil pan would slide under the steering centerlink, but no dice and I had him disconnect the idler arm from the frame allowing the centerlink to fall away enough to remove the pan. He was doing this just as I arrived home from lunch. While I'm watching him work from up above, he's under the car removing the pan and I hear something rattling around in the pan. The freakin' oil pump pickup tube and attach bolts were laying in the bottom of the deep sump 7qt pan! How the hell the bolts came loose is beyond me as I'm positive they were tightened 3 years ago when I built the motor. This explains the zero oil pressure. There is no evidence of bearing damage by looking in the bottom of the pan, but we'll probably pull a main bearing cap off this evening just to make sure. My plan is to re-attach the pickup tube, this time using red locktight and buttoning her backup. It looks like we've dodged a bullet and won't have to tear the engine down afterall.

Sounds like luck has been on your side for a bit. I have had that happen a long time ago and, like you, I knew it was torqued. Did the same as you plan with the locktite. Good luck there.
