Which one is better and why?

I have had a canon powershot sx120is for a while--10x optical zoom--good camera with pretty decent menu--good pics--no problems, I use the long life batterys(2-aa) and they last a long time. I have had several digital cameras and I think cannon is the best so far for me. I would vote cannon.

Canon!! I've borrowed Kodaks, HPs, Nikons and Fujis, and none of them are more idiot friendly than my 4 year old Canon.

Every Kodak I had conked out after 13 months like clockwork, and I'm not hard on cameras. Same thing happened to everyone else I know with Kodaks. HPs were just juuunk. The cheaper Nikons can sometimes take cellphone quality pics, same for the Fujis.

I can't take a good picture to save my soul and the stabilization in the Canon almost makes me look like I'm good at it. :hide

I like the Canon's macro ability but don't like removing batteries to charge on a charger.

According to the reviews they both take pretty soft (lacking detail) pictures.

What is it that has drawn you to these? They are basically point and shoot cameras that look like SLRs.

I'm looking at a Pentax Optio S12. Pretty sweet little rig.

If you can swing a little more money, you can buy a DSLR. I just bought a Nikon D3100 ($599) and there is just no comparison between it and my previous point and shoot.

Looking to buy a new camera this week and have narrowed it down to these two. Primary use will be to photograph family vacations, the kids sports and school events, car shows..........................................................

Between those 2 I would go with the Canon. Both are very similar in Specifications, but the Canon has 14.1 megapixels to the Nikons 12.1 In my opinion megapixels are like horsepower, the more the better and too much is just right. :roll

Because the primary usage is vacations, sports, etc, I'd go with Canon. I have 4 of them in my family.

Canon for sure. I've used point and shoot cameras for about 15 years for my work and no mechanical issues. I currently use a 5 y/o A590 / 8 mpix. It's great.

The only complaints I have are:
- Its tricky to take a close-up shop of an object; 18" or closer. I have to take about 5-6 pics before I get a decent one.
- On flash mode it takes a few seconds to charge up the flash, so no sequential photos.

It's a small sacrifice for an easy to use basic camera.

While I've always had good luck with Canon, I would have to say go with the Nikon on this one.
The extra megapixels are nice, but not necessary. Numbers against numbers the Nikon has macro ability, a higher aperture rate and better resolution with a slightly bigger LCD screen. These cameras won't give you a professional type picture they are much easier to use than any DSLR. The other thing to think about is when you step up to a DLSR is you have to buy other lenses, read more $$ and more stuff to carry. Macro ability, with 36X zoom is more than any normal shooting situation calls for. Both have good burst speed which is good for the kids sports.

Canon. You might want to look at the Panasonic Lumix line - their optics are magnificent. We've got one and love it.

My FIL just received a Samsung SH100 and it is really neat. Wifi on it allows you to transfer your pictures to your pc with one button press and no cables....

Basically drawn to these for the high zoom, tired of going to kids awards ceremonies, concerts, etc. and taking pictures from the seats that I cannot identify which one is my kid.

Thanks one of these is a stretch as it is, just can't justify the same amount or more for a body and then 80 - 400 for each lens desired.

i'm currently using a 5 yr old canon powershot s3is. takes great pics & interprets colors very well. only found a couple colors it has trouble with & those are candy red & candy blue. shot well over 10,000 pics & still going strong, so would have to say canon.

also meant to add, as far as zoom goes, i can get shots like these all day long, no problem. :bowdown
