Which power steering hoses for Shag ?

Going through NPD's catalog they reference by year and motor. I was planning to use a period correct (68) PS pump and Shag's rebuilt PS cylinder and valve. Do I order based on the car or the motor?

Dave S, did you have power steering in your 68?

Craig (1),
I have the same issue. I have a PS pump from a 73 Cougar that had a 351C but it's the same pump the 71 429CJ Mustang used. I needed it so I could use the factory PS pump brackets on my 429 rather then try and adapt a PS pump from a 289 on my BB. When I get around to it I was going to order the hoses for the 71-73 Mustang. The pump is different, I assume the cylinders are all the same?

C2,
According to NPD's catalog they have different part numbers for a
68 pump as compared to a 70 pump. I'd sure hate to spend the dollars on one
only to find "she don't wanna fit". Need to investigate further.

Looks like the same cylinder is used for 67-70.

You could always find a hydraulic shop near you and have them make one specific to your application. Once shag is drivable, if its not to far you could leave the PS belt off, and just drive it down. Then you know it would not interfere with the exhaust or cylinder heads.

I looked for a local hydraulic shop everywhere and never found one.

I say you go by the car not the motor.

Anybody that services heavy equipment will be able to perform the task. Call a local Caterpillar dealer / Bobcat dealer and they can point you in the right direction. Its a billion dollar business, there has to be shops in Kalifornina! :craz

I do have a friend who has used someone locally to produce custom lines. If I don't get anywhere trying to source stock parts, I'll get the name.

For my last '66, I purchased one hose to fit the car and one to fit the pump, then found a shop to join them properly. This also gave me the ability to get the angles correct and the perfect length.

The PS control valve is common between the different years. If you're using the '70 style pump on your engine, buy the hoses to fit that pump and the hoses will route/fit/thread into the '68 control valve.

Yes, like you I ran a '70 351M code motor in my '68FB.

The issue is will a 68 pump mount up onto a 351 block and water pump. If so, I'd go with a 68 pump. If not, I have no choice but to go with a 70+ pump.

Just spoke with Packy of Mustangs R US who said I have to use a 71-73 pump due to it's shape and how it fastens to a Cleveland. Can't think of a way to spend a Sunday than to go to:

Why not go with manual steering? Even with a 351C, it's only a shade heavier than a 302. Only Kalifornia wusses use power steering.

Red is manual and I'm getting tired of it. I love the PS in the GTO and can only wish I can get something anything near that in Shag. Luckily, I can always switch back to manual steering whenever I want. NOTHING is set in concrete.

Yeah get some hoses made. They are always cheaper and at least the place I went to in Compton. They built them in 10 minutes, just enough time to go grab a tamale and a 1 litro of pepsi bottle from the lady walking with her little backpack. I had them made with adjustable ends so I can put them and then adjust the angle.

I doubt you're going to find the hoses you want at NPD. I know when I tried to get mine for my '69 a couple weeks ago, they were no longer available. I got mine from Autozone. Had to order them, but they were cheaper than NPD and got to me in 2 days.

If you go with manual steering, I'd recomend changing to the non power gearbox. I have a PS gearbox still with a manual drag link. It's a PIA to park!!! I drove my dad's 66 non power car a while back and it felt like power steering compared to mine!
