Which spark plugs in the 289?

The manual calls for an Autolite BF-42, with a .34 gap, for the 289cid. The plugs in there now are Autolite 45, and opened to .40. Does the plug type matter, and why would they have had such an excessive gap?

I bought the same plugs as were in the car before I realized the book called for something else. Is there any reason not to use these plugs? Which gap size?

Thanks,
Gary

Autolite 45 is correct for the 289. .035 is for points, but if you have electronic ignition, you can run .040-.045. That is what MSD recommends for under 10.5:1 compression.

It has points, so .035 it is.

Thanks!
