Who is using Mallory Ignitions?

I have a client who has a Mallory Ignition, and wants to bypass the pink resistor wire. Mallory wants me to use a 12 gauge wire from the ignition to the coil; yet the largest wire in the entire 1966 Mustang is 14 gauge. In other words, the Mallory coil consumes more current than the alternator/battery is going to provide in a stock wire harness.

So...has anyone run a 16-18 gauge wire from ignition to coil without a problem?

I've never ran any Mallory stuff (because I've never heard anything good about 'em) but why would the coil use so much current? Coils work by induction to generate a high voltage, low current spark, right? I can't see any reason you'd need a 12 guage wire there. But if you need that big a wire, then relay it off the ignition so the coil gets voltage straight from the battery. I think the stock wire is 16 guage, correct?

I have had Mallory dual point ignition and their coils. Never used 12 guage wire...

In my fastback, I'm running the Hyfire VII ignition box, which requires Mallory's biggest, baddest coil. And I'm not running a 12 gauge wire to the coil. The wires running to the ignition box are pretty good sized, but nothing coming out of the box is bigger than 14-16 gauge.

You sure they didn't mean "make sure there is 12 volts"? Was that in writing or something they told you on a tech line? If tech line, I would call again to confirm.

It probably said to use 14-16 gauge but being as old as Midlife is.......them eyes are.....well you know.

My client and myself both talked with tech support, and asked specifically about wire sizing. Mallory was quite clear: 123 gauge wire or larger. That information is no where to be found on their website, and all of this is leaving both of us wary of continuing to use their systems. Twice now, a small stub of a resistor wire was used inline so that the factory firewall connector could be used. This stub completely burned up as though there was a short circuit.

Yes, we are planning on routing a separate wire bypassing the firewall plug, but I have not heard of this particular problem, leading me to believe something is unusual about the ignition system backfeeding to the ignition switch.

I've been running a Mallory system on my 347 for over ten years. I replaced the pink resistor with a 14 awg wire and never have had a problem with the Hyfire 6AL or the Promaster coil, or the Unilite distributor. The only electrical problem was the feed wire to the Autometer tach with an erratic signal. Corrected it by using a shielded cable from the hyfire box. This set up has went 10.54@132 with a 150 shot of nitrous and 7200 rpm and not a burp.
