But when you say "lost registration" I can't help but think "stolen". New York doesn't have titles for cars this old so the registration is your only proof of ownership.

Can you go to the car and get the vin numbers and run it through the DMV? I wouldn't trust the owner to give me the #. I would want to look at it personally. I have had good luck on craigs list but there are some dirt bags out there trying to take advantage of people.
