Hello! I am doing body work on my 68' and I need to patch a serious hole in the cowl.
    - I am in the process of taking out The dash so I can reach the under side of the hole. It looks like in order to take the gauges out, there is a metal line that looks like it is going to the speedometer. I tried using a line wrench to get at it but there isn't enough room for me to get my hand in there and wrench it off. Does anymore have a better way of doing this?
-Also, I seem to be struggling to take the dash pad out. There is the 2 metal trim pieces up by the front window that I took off. Where else does it fasten?
    Thank you for any replies!

That line is the speedo cable. Once you get the nut loose it should thread off by hand. It's a tight fit for sure. Shouldn't need a line wrench though.

The dash pad is held in by the trim pieces you mention and also a nut on both ends on at the bottom if I remember right. The pad may also be "stuck" to the metal dash frame over the years from gunk around the speaker area.

I know it's a bit more work but on the speedo cable, if you disconnect it from the trans you can pull the cluster away from the dash with the cable hooked to the speedo enough to get to the nut outside of the dash. If you don't want to try that I have also removed the heater control part on the lower left of the dash and you can reach thru there easier than from underneath.

Yep, I have the heater control panel removed. If I take the cable off from the trans, it won't drain all of the fluid out will it? Is it on top of the trans?

no it won't. It's in the tailshaft and higher than the fluid level.

The is also a clamp that holds the speedo cable to the firewall in the engine side close to the steering box.
