does the heater blower get grounded to the stud on the back?

Midlife can be a help for you.
As for a 67 - 68 models , I believe the heaterbox motor finds its ground via the control panel to the dashpanel .So it is important that the control panel makes a good electrical contact with the dashpanel .
IMHO.

I don't have my electrical schematics handy but for your purpose that would be fine. The whole chassis is grounded. As your car is anything but stock if you want to ground it there I see no issues. Just make sure there is good metal to metal contact (no paint) with the nut to the firewall.

From what I remember, yes, thru the switch on my '66's so I would say the 65 would be the same.
