Ethanol question?

I opened up the carb on the "56 because it has been stumbling when getting on it at cruising speed. I used my little might mite vac pump to pull the gas out of the carb and there was about 2" of something on the bottom of the container and then about 4" of gas on top of that . The gas was floating on top of the fluid on the bottom. Is this something that occurs with ethanol? Do I have some water in the gas tank for this to occur or is it just the ethanol mess separating from the gas? :sad

All of the alcohols (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, etc.) are soluble in gasoline. The lower layer of liquid is water, which has very low solubility in gas.
