Finally got the exhaust done! new pics

I have cobbled together some 3" pipes with flowmasters and turndowns at the axle. This has served me for awhile but I finally decided to get the exhaust custom made to run out the side exit holes I have in the body. I got a quote today. The shop will do the job with my exhaust tips and the FPA headers I have installed, they will order the mufflers. Two choices. Magnaflow stainless or Flowmasters. The Flowmasters are about $30 more at $180. These are the Eleanor in and out the same end mufflers. He quoted be about $500ish depending on the mufflers to do the job. The stainless will obviously not rust but which will sound better? The Flowmasters I have now are pretty loud but exit under the car, and I don't have an H or X pipe. The system he will build will have an H pipe and will be 2.5" instead of 3". He is going to work on the car next Saturday (he normally doen't work Sat but wanted to do the car with no interuptions) He said it would take about 4 hours and I could help. I've seen his work, he does a nice job.

Re: Finally getting the exhaust, what mufflers???

Are the Flowmasters the 2 or 3 chamber style?

2 chambers are going to be awfully loud exiting right next to your left ear......

Re: Finally getting the exhaust, what mufflers???

Cloney on the other site had Magnaflows on his Shelby clone, exiting off to the side. The mufflers were fairly quiet during routine driving, but when you got on it, they sounded perfect and loud. You could actually talk to a passenger inside during normal driving. I fell in love with those mufflers, and would have installed them in a heartbeat if I hadn't stayed concours.

:hmm , guess I missed that concours car in your garage....... :rofl

I don't know Dave, I'll have to check with him and see what he ordered. I like what Midlife described with the Magnaflow's. Everyone right now can hear me coming a mile away.

Re: Finally getting the exhaust, what mufflers???

My car will eventually have Magnaflows, I got a helluva deal on the kit. Also have a JBA H pipe.

Re: Finally getting the exhaust, what mufflers???

I prefer Magnaflows. Sound better and flow better.

Re: Finally getting the exhaust, what mufflers???

My fastback had Magnaflows and will again with the new exhaust system. Pretty hard to beat the sound of them.

Re: Finally getting the exhaust, what mufflers???

okay, going with the Magnaflows, exhaust will be installed next weekend.

Well, I finally got the new exhaust made. My old "Tubular Automotive" headers and series 40 flowmasters served me well while my car was in it's "rat rod" stage. After I relocated the UCA and put on lower springs and smaller diameter tires, the headers dragged on everything. I had FPA make me some "shorty" headers and jet hot coat them but I was still using the old 3" pipes and 2 chamber Flowmasters with turn downs under the car. It was LOUD!
Here is a veiw of the old headers

When I did the big block swap in the 90's there weren't a lot of options, these were pretty much full race headers and wouldn't clear the PS so I took it all off.

With my new FPA shorty's I have much more ground clearance and I can add a R&P now. I know I am a hillbilly as you can see my temporary flex pipe there, at least I didn't use the coat hanger and beer can method which is acceptable in KY.
these were the really loud flowmasters and turn downs

now I have my new Magnaflow SS mufflers tucked up nice and tight

We ran out of time Saturday to make an H pipe so I have to go back and get that done later but this thing has turned out to be quite civilized now!

hell, I'll send you my old ones if you promise to put them on.....

I actually think I have an extra bag of new floor pan plugs. They're yours if I can find them. I'll look this weekend.

Thanks guys, I'm sure I have them somewhere. I have moved a few times since starting on this car so they are in a box or tote somewhere. Here's a before video with the old exhaust. I'll need to record the new exhaust when I get home.

I found 'em (the plugs), the new ones and the originals. I am missing the ones that go in the trunk for the shocks though, anybody have some of those they want to sell?
