I was up at Patuxent River NAS earlier this week for equipment testing, and our equipment decided to take on a mind of its own, and did something totally unexpected and whacky. So...off the helicopter it came, and they (the powers that be!) wanted it shipped pronto back down to Florida. Knowing that I don't mind long drives, they asked me to escort that puppy down in a big GO Penske Truck. Woohoo! No dealing with TSA and missing flights! So...off I go this AM, passing through Richmond (home of Phillip Morris), North and South Carolina. I was tempted to stop at "South of the Border" but didn't. When I stopped to get gas, I found my cigarettes were $10 a carton cheaper than in Florida, so I stocked up. As I passed the exit to Myrtle Beach, i said "hello" to Beach Pony. I also had a couple swear words for Dave Sandborn, but since I didn't know exactly what exit off I95 was right, I just swore all the way down.

Right now, I'm 33 miles North of Savannah, having found a hotel room to share with my good friend, Old Grand Dad. Should be back in Panama City tomorrow afternoon.

There are two Carolinas? Holy crap! When did that happen? Did NC succeed when they found out Sanford was seeing his broad in Argentina?

You shoulda stopped and checked on Dave, I bet he could have used a hug today...
....or maybe a new computer (one without baseball bat damage) :bash

Damn Randy! Wish I'd have known. I was at 95 and 378 just a little south of Florence around 3:30 yesterday. I bet you were in that neighborhood round that time. We coulda had a drink! You better call next time! :bash

Drinking and driving while on official Gubbermint business is a bad idea. I gotta tell ya, though...I95 through SC is awful: the road is beat up, no scenery to speak of, and no Starbucks anywhere along the road. I want my money back!

I just got home, so you can bring the kiddies out to play again in the streets.

ole Dave is just fine.

Reported directly to the local mexican restaurant after work on friday to start drinking my Budweiser while the Mrs' sipped on her margarita's. We left the restauarant around 8PM and headed across the street to a new "club" that was having it's opening night where I proceeded to drink more beers and the wife and her GF's danced the night away. Saturday I drove around in circles all day mowing the yard, cleaned up around 6PM and then headed off to a BBQ/UFC party. Beer ponged for a few hours before the fight came on.... did anyone see the main event Couture fight? Couture is still a freakin' animal. Sunday we slept late and then went on a 7 hour bike ride.

It feels great to get back to work where I can sit down and relax!

Off I-95.... I believe the most direct route to my house would be the "Smithfield" exit. There's about 100 billboards along 95 announcing this exit as "JR's... the home of the cheapest cigarettes/everything". I'm a good 2 hours east of I-95, but I look forward to seeing a bunch of you guys next month down in MB.

I thought about stopping at JR's, but with all that signage, how in the world can they afford to sell cigs at the lowest price?

Simple, most tobacco comes from RJ Reynolds, its not a coincidence that JR's, sells them the cheapest..........

They don't. It's just advertising to get you off of the highway. I stopped in one time and left empty handed as the prices there were the same as in my hometown. I buy my cigs on base and save the sales tax. A carton of Marlboro Reds has been running me approx. $38.

Which in my opinion is a load of crap.....

Merchandise on base is supposed to be "tax-free". Somewhere along the way this died. Merchandise is still sold w/o tax, but the prices of the merchandise are "marked up" to "just pennies below" the off base price.

WTF?

Used to be back in the old days you could buy gas, cigs and booze FAR CHEAPER on base than you could out in town. Those days are long gone.

That all happened in the 80's when the off base business's complained they could not compete fairly with the base. Screwed us for sure. Now, prices are set according to local business's within a certain range of the base. I dealt with the units on base when that change happened.

Good thing I stopped in SC for gas, and bought 3 cartons for $111. I plan on buying more on my trip to MBB. Now to find the cheapest store in Myrtle Beach!
