Oh man, this is a doozy of a decision to make. So I'll ask you guys and maybe someone will convince me.
This year, the HRPT and American Graffiti Festival fall on the same dates. The HRPT is starting in Kentucky and touring through my home state of NC. American Graffiti, of course, is in Modesto.
I live halfway between both of those.
So I am trying to figure out which one would be better to go to. I've never been on the HRPT, but I've also never brought Jane to American Graffiti. I know I've got a good crew to hang out with at Graffiti. I don't know anyone on the HRPT, but if I went I could visit home / my parents / my friends so there's that. Oh, did I mention it'll be my birthday? Because it'll be my birthday.
Anyways, as I see it, given my two weeks of vacation, here are my three options:
1) Do American Graffiti. Take off June 1st, futz around until I hit Modesto by Friday or so, do Graffiti, leave on Sunday, futz around until I get back to Austin on the 17th. If I did this I would have a few days on either end to devote to seeing cool stuff, since the drive out is around 30 hours (3 solid days driving). The minus side is... 30 hour drive! But I would probably go see a few of the smaller national parks.
2) Do HRPT. Take off Weds June 6th, drive to Bowling Green, try to convince Holley to put a new fuel injection system on my car, do the HRPT, hang out at home for two days, then leave on the 17th and get back on the 19th. No hiking stops, mostly a lot of driving, but could be cool to go home and maybe I could convince some buddies to go with me on some of the power tour stops.
3) Insanity option: do both (but only one with Jane). Take off June 1st, futz around until I hit Modesto by Friday or so, do Graffiti, leave Sunday and book it home to get back to Austin late on the 12th. Take a flight out to Raleigh, NC on the 13th, drive whatever I can find on the power tour the 14th and 15th, hang out at with family for the rest of the weekend, fly back to Austin on the 17th. I would get to see a couple cool destinations on the way to Modesto, and then have to hoof it and be really lucky to not miss my flight out of Austin on the 13th. But if I timed it right I could feasibly do both events
Kind of leaning towards either option 1 or 3. While long hauling the HRPT would be a cool experience, I have driven through more than enough of the American South in summer to know that it's just a lot of trees and swamps and humidity.
Any thoughts?
