I got my new 331 and it is installed..........

Re: I got my new 331 and it is installed............well sort of.

That looks great Darreld. After seeing the craftsmanship on that thing you wont want me to weld anything for you again. I am looking forward to seeing that installed.

Re: I got my new 331 and it is installed............well sort of.

Damn Darreld, that is nice.

Is that a built-in temp sender on the lower drivers side? Where does the overflow tube route to? From the picture I see that it runs down towards the bottom, but where does it terminate?

Re: I got my new 331 and it is installed............well sort of.

Good eye Dave. The temp sensor on the DS bottom is for my second sensor. One set of fans comes on at 180 and the other set at 195. The down flow tube runs along the bottom of the radiator and exits right next to my overflow tank. You should be able to see the tube just above the lower hose on the DS.

I did some trimming on the radiator support last night and the thing fits like a glove. I have about 1/4"-1/3" of clearance between the crank and the fan shroud. It almost looks like it custom made for my car. Oh, yea it was. It really changes the look of the engine compartment. Much more menacing than it was before and it give is a great finishing touch.

Do I really have to post that happy pic about the not happening without pics? We know that you are going to show us what you mean by "menacing" right? fd

I finally got around to taking a picture. I still have quite a bit of little things to do but it is starting to look like it could run again.

Darreld,

A question.....

In the manufacturer's provided photo of your new radiator it is apparent that the radiator is a downflow design. It's obvious that there is a tank on top of the radiator.

In this picture of your new radiator it appears that the tanks are on the sides? Is this just the appearance or are the tanks on the sides of the radiator?

The picture above is one of 3 examples he sent me when I was evaluating using him. After we spoke more and I gave him my measurements he felt that a cross flow double pass radiator was the best option. I did not have the clearance by the blower for both the fan assembly and the inlet.

Okay.... so the above pictured driver's side tank is not "one solid tank" that would allow coolant to run straight down from the inlet to the outlet..... it's divided/blocked in the middle area thus forcing the coolant to run towards the passenger side and then back over to the driver's side lower outlet?

Is there a side tank on the passenger side of the radiator? In the photo it looks as if the horizontal cooling tubes run all of the way over to the very end of the radiator.

There is a tank on the PS. The filler neck is mounted on the tank as well at a petcock for draining the radiator. In the photo of the drivers side you can see a horizontal weld mark that is about half way down the tank. This is where the tank is divided. I have to fill the tank on the passenger side even though the overflow tank is on the drivers side of the car. This is because that the pressure is the radiator has better balance by having the inlet and filler necks at different locations. (I think that is what he said). That is why we had to go with the unusual stainless tube that goes from the filler neck down the radiator on the PS, across the bottom in the shroud and exit by the lower hose.

He did say that double pass radiators were not quite as effective as a single pass but it would not be a problem with my setup. I can't remember exactly why he felt that way but I think it was regarding the amount of flow is reduced since it has to make two passes through the radiator before it goes back in the engine. I would think that would help in cooling but what the heck do I know.

Re: I got my new 331 and it is installed............well sort of.

Here is some tech info about Double pass radiators I found on the net. It makes a little more sense to me now. I am using a Meziere 55 gph electric water pump so I guess that should help me out. I'll have consistant water flow at any rpm.

Double pass radiators require 16x more pressure to flow the same volume of coolant through them, as compared to a single pass radiator. Triple pass radiators require 64x more pressure to maintain the same volume. Automotive water pumps are a centrifugal design, not positive displacement, so with a double pass radiator, the pressure is doubled and flow is reduced by approximately 33%. Modern radiator designs, using wide/thin cross sections tubes, seldom benefit from multiple pass configurations. The decrease in flow caused by multiple passes offsets any benefits of a high-flow water pump.

Re: I got my new 331 and it is installed............well sort of.

Well it's in there! I need to get a new lower radiator hose, tighten the collector bolts, fill the H2O/Meth tank, put coolant and gas in the car. After that I should be ready to fire her up. Timing it should be a pain in the arse. I can't even see the timing pointer. I might have to use a mirror to get that part done. Before I can take it for a test drive I'll have to bleed the brakes because I disconnected the lines when I put the engine in so I wouldn't scratch anything. With any luck and good weather I will take it out for a spin this weekend! :pbj

Now, that's pure engine porn!

:wor :wor :wor

The engine compartment sure is packed full. Beautiful.

Looking forward to hearing it run!

Can't wait for the test drive report!

Looks fantastic. Hat's off to you.

Re: I got my new 331 and it is installed............Finally!!!!!

Yep, 2 MSD boxes. I want to have enough spark to blow the spark plugs right out of the heads. LOL! Actually one is a 6AL box and the other is a boost timing retard in case I get some crappy gas and need to retard the timing. I can adjust the timing from a knob in my glove box. It allows me to retard it 3 degrees. That and the H2O/Meth injection give me a little piece of mind.

Re: I got my new 331 and it is installed............Finally!!!!!

@#$%@#$%@% anti freeze leak!!!!!!! I get the lower radiator hose on and start to fill the radiator with coolant and get about half the way done and hear water on the ground. Look under the car and it is pouring out from the passenger side of the engine. It looks like a freeze plug is not sealing or missing. WHAT THE $%&*! I am used to fixing my own S*%T but don't like to fix the crap that others don't do right after you have paid good money. I called the engine builder and will have him come and help me fix it. I guess I won't be starting it this weekend. :rp

Re: I got my new 331 and it is installed............Finally!!!!!

This doesn't instill a lot of confidence for me in the engine builder. You'd have to be blind and drunk to screw up a freeze plug enough for it to leak that bad. A slight seepage I could maybe see, but for it to be leaking that badly? Yikes!

Re: I got my new 331 and it is installed............Finally!!!!!

He is a picture I took of the bottom end before paint. Can anyone see a problem? It doesn't look like it to me but there must be something.
