Towing my 66

i also did tow a 65 coupe with a c4 without disconnecting the driveshaft from vicksburg ms to bradenton fl in 1997. it did ruin the tranny and required a rebuild-but i stand by my story of towing many many std shift early stangs without problems. wes

I have the original owner's manual that came with my car. It says to tow a manual with the tranny out of gear, but it's OK to leave the driveshaft in the car. But it says to tow an automatic with the driveshaft disconnected...

BUT my car didn't come with toploaders...are any of the mustangs you towed toploaders? If Kee says not to do it, I recommend people listen!!

info from kee is wrong about towing std shift-1st classic mustang i bought was a 66 convrt in cinn ohio- was attending ibm school in lex ky and took a weekend jaunt to ohio and there was a hugh automotive swap meet along the interstate where i bought a uhual type tow bar-in cinn i bought a 66 mustang convrt for 200.00 6 cyl std shift and towed it home to vicksburg ms ,leaving driveshaft connected, used as my service vehicle for approx 4 yrs, never a prob w/tranny-sold it and 2 other conrts to a guy in texas city tx and flat towed and drove one and he towed the other to tx and i went on to copier sch in boulder col. never dis drive shaft in std shift cars-maybe on these newer forign jobbers u have to but on classic and older cars never have. dont know who u talked to at david kees but they are full of political b/s. i was looking for where i had seen it in writing from ford and the owners manual which i didnt have one handy yesterday is not wrong. wes

Wes, relax I believe you. Maybe it has to do with a tow dolly and the oil is in the back of the transmission do to the angle of the car and leaving the front bearing without lubrication, I don't know I'am just brainstorming. The e-mail statement they sent said it would lock up and thats a pretty harsh statement. Too me that means something quits turning and thats not good or maybe they just don't want to stick their neck out in case something happend. You have to admit that they are the best toploader experts around. I'am sure their is a good explaination for this but will probably never know.

So I may or may not try it I'll have to think about it for a while. At the moment I'am getting it ready for a parade tomorrow and it has began to start smokeing so looks like I may have some engine work to do. Is their no end to this stuff.

towed my 66 4sp toploader mustang 289w351w heads w-tow dolly and tranny in nuetral from vicksburg ms 400 miles towards fl before my caddillac cooling system warning light came on- then towed cad with 66 mustang rest of the way-about 300 miles-kept mustang another 8 years before selling to my best friend in clinton ms and never had a problem. my take on this -call dan williams-a toploader specialist also-maybe u will get correct info from them-ive owned close to 200 classic mustangs -had 100 in my back yard before irs scared me out of business-they were targeting a lot of small business in vicksburg when they came after me-had all my ducks in a row but still wanted more money every time they came by-i gave up-hard to fight the gov-irs rep in ft myers fl dismissed the case after me selling out and moving-didnt pay a dime. only times ive disconnected drive shaft and tied up out of the way of rear end pinion was on automatics. then upon reaching destination you position some 2x4or6s and stop back wheels on them and crawl under and fasten the 2 u-type studs and put 4 nuts on and ur done.always carried a piece of cardboard in my trunk so i didnt have to lay in the mud or fireants. wes
