Corn Hauler
The gas gauge quit working in Julie's f100. It has an after market cluster (Dolphin). When you turn on the key. The needle for to "E" but does not move any further even after a fill up. Where do I start on this to diagnose?
 
First check the fuses. Then I would search for a wiring/electrical diagram.
Is the sender a variable resistor (old school ) or is it a sensor (mostly 3 wires , 1 ground , 1 voltage (5 or 12 volts) and 1 is the trigger )
Don't ground any wire if you don't know what its function is , it could be the voltage supply wire and causing a short circuit !!!
 
oh , 1959 , check voltage regulator on the back of the instrument cluster probably and you could ground the wire at the fuel sender and look if the gauge moves a bit.
 
I don't know about the 59 or the aftermarket cluster but I don't think the gas gauge goes thru a voltage regulator like temp and oil pressure do.
You could try grounding the wire from the sender vs no ground to see at least if the gauge moves
 
i would start by making sure the grounds are good. clean them up and make sure they are tight. after that make sure there is voltage getting to the sending unit. if these are ok, then pull the sending unit and check it for proper function. it might be stuck in place, or it might be a bad unit.
 
E for Empty, or E as in F U E L?
I suspect a leaking float.
