Welcome truth back

Well my son told us some good news at dinner today....he got a new job.

Back story...
Son lives at home here with girlfriend. She had a troubled home and he wanted her out of there. This ain't no youngster kid...he's 33 now.
He never really sorted his life out just having simple work on and off all these years. Two years ago my wife suggests he go to community college to complete his degree and also get a A&P license. With that he could work anywhere. Well he worked hard at school and got both licenses this past summer. He went to work at a place at San Jose airport working on avionics, an area he wanted to specialize in.

Last January we told them both that a year from now they wouldn't live with us....meaning we would kick them out. Incentive I called it.

Tonight he announces that he got a job with Gulfstream Aerospace in ...wait for it......Appleton, Wisconsin.

Yeah this California kid is moving to the cold midwest. (Pat have any advice?)

He will be working with the avionics of these multimillion dollar aircraft. I used to be wise to business aircraft back in my flying days but haven't been close to that business in many, many years.

Although I wanted him out on his own...Wisconsin is pretty far away. Happy and sad.

Well that is great news, except for the moving to Wisconsin part. He's going to die his first winter. Seriously!

I have heard Gulfstream is a very good company to work for.

I grew up in Appleton so if he wants to know anything let me know. It's actually a great City, for Wisconsin anyway. I'm only about 20 minutes south now. You can give him number.

When are they moving here?

Well on the bright side, he can buy a huge house for $20 there.

Congratulations Mike. It is always nice when our offspring actually become self sufficient.

Good news Mike! Glad to see things are working out for him. I guess you lost your live in dog/house sitter though?

He will be moving in the dead of winter. Yep it could only get better from there.
Nest step is logistics. Moving 2 cars and 2 motorcycles plus belongings. As ol'dad I can't butt in too much. I'll offer help if needed.

Yeah the live in dog sitter is no more.

A good dad would throw the bikes in the back of his fancy red F250, grab a friends car trailer, load up a car and haul the boy East.

He should take what he can get in the moving truck with a car trailer and come back in Spring for the bikes and second car.

Well thanks Ken. When should I drop by to pick up the trailer?:p

Wisconsin will be culture shock for him.

He'll be fine, just be there for support and help him get there.

My parents didn't know what to do with themselves when my brother and I moved out.

He says GS is adding money for move but they don’t hire movers. He doesn’t have that much. 2 cars & 2 motorcycles though.

I will offer advice when needed but I usually just get the ‘look’

Thanks Ken. Might take you up on it. But that would mean “I” would have to drive. And they have to think on me tagging along

Well if they need and extra set of hands unloading when they get here I would be available.

Second car will be driven by the girlfriend
That makes it easier.

If she rides they can fly in sometime in spring and ride them back if they are that type of bike. If not fly in and uhaul them back.

I like being a empty nester. One the plus side I can look out my living room window and see the house my child is living in. (Our rental property) On the minus side she will come over unannounced, like me washing dishes in my underwear.
Good luck in the new job. ( your son that is)

Bitter sweet feeling. Out of the house....yeah :D but too far from home....bummer :(
The best way to handle this , is to wait for them asking help. Meaning letting them go .

Wisconsin is not exactly cheap. Compared to CA maybe but still can be pricey in nice established non-rural area. Best advice I have is to move very little and start from scratch there. A small rental truck from UHaul would cost about $2k not including gas and all the other travel costs along the way (hotel, food, etc.). Save all that cash and use it to buy new stuff in WI. Craigslist is also a great way to quickly furnish a place for cheap. You can find all kinds of like new stuff. You'd be surprised.
There won;t be much of a culture shock because, well, WI has very little culture! Beer, brats and large women. Get that down and you are like the natives. Oh, and you have to like cry-baby QBs too.
