65 Vert with 2.5" exhaust with and x-pipe???

I'd like to go with 2.5" exhaust when I get around to it. Has anyone ever managed to put an x-pipe with that big plate brace thing bolted under the transmission?

I'm running JBA shorties and a t-5z trans.

Thanks in advance,
-Shannon

You'll never get enough out of the JBA's to justify 2.5" or bigger exhaust. Unless you just got a smoking deal on this exhaust, I'd stick with 2.25" system.

Yeah, you're probably right on that.. but I'm more concerned with the x-pipe fitting that the 2.5" pipe.

The x-pipe will be tough with the convertible bracing. I can't really help on that, though, never having owned a vert.

I am having the same issue with my 66 Convertible. I bought the 2.5" Magnaflow duals and its too tight! I might take mine down to the exhaust shop and have them cut out the 2.5" and replace with 2.25 or 2" so I can keep exhaust from being seen from the side. BTW, I have shorties, and an AOD stuffed under there.

I just got done installing 2.5" stainless custom exhaust on my 68 convertible. I have JBA shorty's, magnaflow mufflers, electric oval cutouts. My exhaust runs under the rear due to my coilover rear suspension. It is very tight and can't bee seen from the side. I went as far as making a new tranny crossmember so that the exhaust could run on the side of the transmission. I don't think I could have done it, or rather my exhaust guy, with an X pipe. I had him add some flanges at different points so that I could remove the tranny or rear end for service and not have to cut the exhaust in the process.

68EFI,

Really nice setup you have there. What transmission are you running? That thing looks huge!

Well.. I'm about half-way done with the engine assembly now. I hope I'll be ready to drop it in the engine bay in 2-3 weeks.

I bought Dr. Gas' x-pipe specifically made for the 65-66 convertible, so we'll see how that goes. I'm hoping that I don't have to modify much down there.. but I'm thinking at a minimum I'll have to add a spacer to the chassis crossplate that lives under the transmission. I've heard that doing that is a big no-no, but its only as a last resort. I have a pretty good exhaust guy so may he'll be a miracle worker here...

I should be getting the x-pipe today. I'll post some pics.

Thanks for the info,
-Shannon

I saw the Dr. Gas crossover and considered it until I saw the price. Let us know how it fits. I am using a T56 6 speed. It is a pretty big tranny.

Yeah.. it's not cheap... none of his stuff is.. but a good exhaust guy would charge some $$$ to fab up a quality x-pipe too. And then it still has to fit.

If it fits, i think it's worth it.

Hey Darreld, I asked this on another thread as well but I noticed your cut-outs are turned to the inside too. Why? Is it a fitment issue with that particular unit? I would think having the two facing inward and toward each other would have a weird affect on the harmonics and such and change the sound of the exhaust. Just curious as every other cut-out I have ever seen was either straight down or, most commonly, facing out to either side of the car.

I was looking for ground clearance and not being able to see them from the side. For the limited time they will be open I am not worried about harmonics. It is going to be so damn loud anyways I don't think it would matter. I just didn't want to destroy a $400 investment on a speed bump. I asked the mfg of the cutouts if it mattered where they were mounted and he said it didn't.

It can be done. Have the magnaflow 2.5 system on my 66 vert, and one going on my other 66 vert gt this week. The first done by a couple motorheads in a local garage, and the current gt being done by an exhaust shop and my resto guy. This one needed pipe fab to connect the system to the Hipo exhaust manifold. The first 66 was a little easier because it had tri-y headers. First vert pipes only barely visible for a foot or two past the front fender well. No ground clearance problems. Good luck.
