Here is how the driver side vent window frame fits on my car.

Problem is the glass is tight against the outside at the bottom, and tight against the inside at the top. The window is adjusted against the stop on the top and probably could be adjusted another 1/8-1/4 inch or so, but it is binding as it is at the top and can't really go any higher. The vent frame needs to be curved more towards the inside of the car as it goes towards the roof.

How bad does that look? Should I just accept it as-is or yank it to get a refund and have the original replated?

Re: 68 repro vent frames - opinion

Sam,
I am not an expert but i think :
I am also aligning or trying to align the side glass and i came to the conclusion that after you have aligned the door and put in the side glass first and vent after and put it in place roughly , you first have to align the side glass BEFORE the vent frame.
The side glass has 2 upper stops.1 on the glassframe itself and the other is located on the rear runner.
You have to make sure that the side glass lign up to the rear of the dooropening and regulate the rear upper stop to align the rear upper corner of the glass with the rubber.Do this in small steps.
After roughly aligning the side glass you can align the vent frame. The vent frame has 4 bolt but 2 bolts can be adjust the tilting of the vent(this can be done by using a allen key and rotate counterclockwise to have or create more tilt towards the car )
First , the 4 bolts must be inplace and tighten loosely .
Thats the rough aligning.
Go this all over again to fine tune everything.
As i stated earlier , I AM NOT AN EXPERT but IMHO.
Hope it will helps you.

Re: 68 repro vent frames - opinion

I just installed 2 new repop vent window frames in my '67 and they fit fine in the doors. You might just need to adjust those a little better.

The only problem I have with them is the small screw indent at the top of the vent frame that holds the long vertical weather stripping in place is not deep enough for the screw head. So, the head of the screw sits up a little too high.

Both the door glass and vent window frame are adjustable - in all directions. You just need to work on the adjustments until everything's OK.

I think you need to adjust the frame to the body (not the door glass) first. Then the door glass to the frame. You will also have to juggle with the rear edge of the door glass because as you adjust to fit the vent, you move the rear edge, too. It's like shooting at a moving target. But, with patience, you can get there.

Re: 68 repro vent frames - opinion

I had difficulties adjusting my repro vent frames too. Eventually, I did get the adjustment dialed in. However, the thing I don't like about my repro vent frames is how the vent frame glass sits in the frame. The glass does not align with the frame as well as I'd like. the upper edge hits the weather stripping when you open/close the vent glass.

If I were to do it all over, I'd go ahead and pay the extra money to have a set of original frames rechromed. One of these days I'll have my original frames rechromed, but I'm not looking forward to rebuilding the doors again.

Re: 68 repro vent frames - opinion

The guy who did my driver side only does Mustangs professionally, so I can't imagine he didn't get it for lack of trying. I'll play with it but I don't expect to get anywhere. I'll give it a shot, and in the meantime, I'm still shopping for a chrome shop. Think I might have a lead with Rick.

Sam, I replaced my vent frames with repops and I had problems with the vent glass not seating right into the weatherstripping. You have to adjust the pivot pin on top of the vent glass frame and in some cases slot the tensioner bracket holes where the spring is on the bottom of the frame. I had to do both adjustments to mine and they came out perfect. Mustang monthly has an article on how to install new vent frames. Check out the link and if you have any questions just get back to me.

Re: 68 repro vent frames - opinion

Finally got it fixed. See other post thanking Craig for the chroming.

I ended up getting the original frames replated. I literally did nothing to line it up. It fell right into place, lined up perfect with the window. All I had to do was adjust the two adjustable bolts to keep it tight where it was and I was done. Took 10 minutes or so to transfer the parts to the replated frames, and maybe 10 minutes tops to drop it in and get everything tight.

Considering the price on the repops, and the price on replating originals, this is a no-brainer. Go with the original ones.

Compare pics below of original installed to repops at top of topic.
