Arning Fail

So, today I was doing some stuff with my front end. FINALLY have everything done on my homemade adjustable strut rods except for the ends that bolt to the LCAs...But I DID find a backyard machinist who can turn and thread the stock ends for me, so I'm really close there.

While I was out there today, I decided to finally bolt on my Shelby/Arning drop template and drill those out. So I drilled the 1/8" pilot holes, everything's good. I stepped the holes up using my unibit, and it made short work of them...Got them to maybe 3/8" and then finished them off with my 17/32 drill bit that Opentraker so kindly gave me.

I got the passenger side drilled out and started on the driver's side. As I broke through on the first hole on the driver's side, a burr formed, and the bit caught twisted the drill, and snapped the bit right in half. Right down the middle of the bit.

DOH!! EPIC FAIL!

With the left over broken bit I was able to clean that third hole out, and it's fine, but I still have one hole to go. I think I'm gonna just drill it out with a 1/2" bit and wobble it out and then clean it with a file.

What a day.

A 1/2" bit with a little filing afterward will work fine. That bit was an " off-shore bit " :dh :cry ..... :barf

Thanks, John...I appreciate it! I'll get back out there in a bit and finish it off.

Here's the bit:

I had that problem a lot when I was doing mine. Fortunately the drill I was using sucked, so every time the bit caught it just spun in the drill.

i've got an extra 17/32 bit out in the shop (i bought two ahead of time cuz thats happened to me many times) if you want, i'll send it to ya.

At least you didn't break off a drill bit while drilling steam holes in your block for new heads that don't match up to stock steam holes. Nothing major but knowing you have to get it through and fish it out with a magnet is a little nerving.

Thanks, Steve! But I went ahead and used the 1/2" bit and filed the hole out, as John suggested, and it worked out good!

So tonight I'm going to bed and there's actually a piece of the front suspension installed on the car! Been a while since I stripped it all down.

Thanks again for the kind offer!

BTW...does anyone need a drop template? First to PM gets it. This has been claimed.

You know what they say Steve, the best thing to do is pull your pants up and get back out there...
Sorry, couldn't resist :craz
Glad that worked.
Jon

glad everything worked out!

if anyone else needs templates, i've got a book i bought back in the mid 80's that has both templates 65-66 & 67-70 that i can scan & post, email or snail mail.

I actually did do that, twice even. Although I was lucky enough to break the bits above the deck level so I could twist them back out.
