I want to add an aux guage cluster with oil, water and volts. I know I will need to replace the stock senders for oil and water and will lose the (nearly meaningless) stock dash guages for temp and oil pressure. For appearance, any reason I cannot remove and re-pin the dash oil and temp needles to the middle of the range and just leave the dead gauges parked there with the needles in the middle? I guess I could just let them stay on the left, which is, I assume, where they will live without voltage, but I just like gauge with needles in the middle. I know I could spring for a whole new aftermarket cluster, but I dont want to do that now. If my plan is a bad idea, let me know. I can be stupid with things like that if I am not careful.

Why not just retrofit in the new gauges into your existing bezel? Many have done the autometer convesion. I did it for my '70.

Craig and Rick have both done it for their 67/68 cars (sorry guys - I don't know your respective years).



I think a dummy gauge would be kind of... :ga
I just say it how I see it...
 
You don't necessarily have to lose the stock gauges depending on your setup. As for the oil pressure, a simple Tee fitting utilizing the stock sender and the new sender would allow both gauges to work. As for the temp gauge, what intake are you running? Does it have more than one water port at the corners of the intake? Are you using the port on your water neck? If you have more than one port on the intake or can use the port on your water neck, then you can run two senders to keep the stock gauge. My intake has 3 water ports (2 rear corner and one front driver corner) as well as an unused port on the water neck, so I am able to keep the stock electric temp gauge and run a mechanical autometer gauge. My tach cluster only has an oil warning light, so I wasn't worried about keeping it along with my mechanical oil pressure gauge. I have seen the Tee fitting used on other Mustangs though.

Pretty much exactly like that. If I ever saw a guy doing that, I would have to point and laugh at him.

Thank god I'm running a plane ole' carburetor scoop! Shewww...

Or having a scoop under a scoop... :scar ...sorry, my possessed fingers made me type that!!!

I redid my instrument cluster to find the gauges in:

Next time, I'd probably go with the smaller speedo, so I wouldn't have to cut the whole cluster in half.

Thats the way to go.Plain and simple is always the best solution !!!

What size gauges did you use? Did they require you to enlarge the holes? The plan was to mount my new gauges behind the stock bezel, but I really don't like how far back they sit. Now we'll try enlarging the holes so they can go in from the front, as your's appears to do. The speedo fits now but the others need work. I was getting ready to buy a 6-gauge cluster but I like how your gauges look with the stock setup. Since I'm planning on a rally pack, primarily for the tach, I'm torn between the stock 5-gauge cluster, and a six with the tach.
