Back to basics regarding testing for shorts

From the sounds of things, you have not verified that the battery is in fact dead or low after sitting. Could this be a problem with the engine....timing a bit off or something? I had one like that and it always started hard. A few minor changes and it spun over great with the same battery. Just some thoughts.............
 
I'm assuming this is the original style starter? My first car back in '70s would barely start after sitting a week or so. Battery was good, etc. Changed the starter and it worked fine. It was a six cylinder, so you would think easy to crank, and I have no idea why it started fine if cranked everyday, but drug if it sat a week.
