Brush with celebrity?

The post about Jim Thome (yeah that name was on the tip of my tongue) got me to thinking. (yeah it happens occassionally)

Lets read some stories of you personal experience of a encounter, brush with a celebrity.
No 'my brother once saw' or ' mom met the local WalMart greeter'. Lets have some actual contact with the person.

Mine was way back in 1974. My brother, his wife , me and my girlfreind (wife now) went into Beverly Hills to see the conglomeration film "That's Entertainment". Before the movie my brother and I were at the candy counter with a good crowd. I asked the clerk for a box of Milk Duds. When he threw a box up on the counter I reached for it. The clerk said 'no those are for him' nodding to the guy next to me. I looked at the guy next to me and in a blue valour jacket was Ricky Nelson. I said sorry and he took his candy over to a nice blonde lady who was very pregnant, who would have been Kris Nelson with their 4th child. We then went to sit with our wives and about to explain who we saw and went to look over our shoulders there sitting behind us were the Nelsons.

Went to school with Harvey Lee Yeary's brother. Went out drinking with Harvey Lee Yeary a few time. This was before he became the six million dollar man.

Ok, here's mine. Oddly it happened in a theater too.

Back in the mid nineties I was managing a movie theater. One day my cashier calls me up to the front and standing in front of her is Willie nelson and 3 of his bodyguards I guess. He was in the area for a concert. She asked me if we should charge him and I say if they want to come in they pay like everyone else. So they buy their tickets and walk in.
At this point all my employees are now freaking out about it, so Willie asks if anyone wants autographs. Everyone lines up and he starts signing. At the end he looks at me and asks if I want one too. I say no thanks. I'm not that big of a fan so what am I going to do with it. He then went in and sat in a theater and watched his movie.

The only other encounters I have had were minor.
I met Cheryl crow at camp jeep in Colorado jeep jamboree in the late nineties. She was the concert for the evening and was hanging out around on the grounds.

And if you count NFL players I have met a lot of the packers over the years. I used to work for Reebok many years ago and we were the official sponsor at the time, so they would all get an allowance to come in to our stores and shop for their friends and families. And any time there was a visiting team come to play at lambeau they would stay at the hotel my mother worked at. So we would hang out at the pool on game weekends and lots of the players would be down there just relaxing by the pool. Even played ping pong with a few opposing team members.

That's all I can think of now.

I got drunk with the band Saliva.
The next one isn't mine, but I have seen photo proof of the meeting. I was only a few years old when this occured. My dad met Chuck Norris, shook his hand....and lived.

Prob four years ago we were at canton, il. cruise night, This big guy comes up and looks at our 73 and lightly touches it and says "nice car" It was the guy from the american choppers show, he was in the area working a deal with caterpillar about building them a bike. He was just looking at all the cars by himself and yes he is mean looking in person.

I have several, but the best was Larry Hagman. I was out of my office when the call came in from his secretary. My secretary thought it was a joke at first. But he left his home number and asked me to call him. It was about that radar weather warning system that they established in the mid90s. I was working with a client to help block one and Hagman was doing the same where he lived.

So, I called the number, said who I was, and a minute later Larry was on the other end. He's a very pleasant man and we had a good talk. A couple weeks later, he came to Tucson for the trial, where I was the only one allowed to testify before the judge railroaded the installation through destroying the property values of my clients, who received no compensation. After the trial, Larry came up to me and shook my hand and thanked me for trying to help.

Interestingly, the judge in the trial was the one who was killed by Loughner last year when he fired on the Town Hall meeting.

Oh yeah, I still have his phone number.

I have a couple anecdotes, but here is one that I remember.

My brother deals in used guitars and photographs, often times with celebrities. Once, he dragged me to a guitar repair shop, and Jackson Browne was there. I offered to sell him my bootleg recording of him so that it wouldn't be available...he thought that was funny (as did I).

My position in the gov't required me to brief 4 1-star admirals. At the time, one of them was Jim Jones (well, he was a Marine, so he was a 1-star general). He was very much down-to-earth and approachable. He went on to be a 4-star, head of NATO, and Obama's first National Security Adviser.

I'm very much unimpressed with celebrity and fame. Everyone has to put their pants on one leg at a time.

Also had a few over the years.

Best one was flying with my sister's boyfriend to Grand Island, NE to pick up Pat Boone and bring him back to KC. Had breakfast the next morning and signed autographs with him. People figured I was famous also and had me sign everything he was signing.

This lead to the meeting of Priscilla Presley when my sister and her boyfriend died in a plane crash a year later. The same plane I flew in with Pat Boone. My sister's boyfriend was a friend of Priscilla's and she attended the funeral.

Met Patrick Dempsey, Marino Franchitti, and others while attending the ALMS driver's meeting at Road America in August.

Also have a celebrity in the family. Todd Wilbur, www.topsecretrecipes.com, is relation from my Mom's side of the family.

Do religious icons count as celebrity? If so, :Mark wins this one because his wife has got to be a saint and he not only met her, he tricked her into marrying him!

I just talked to this guy a couple of weeks ago at a restaurant, Todd Hoffman from the Gold Rush show. He was with Dave Turin.

I ran into Steven Tyler from Aerosmith at the PDX airport.

I sat in a booth next to Alice Cooper in a truck stop.

I said hi to Kevin Garnett when I saw him in China Town in San Francisco.

I saw Lindsey Wagner (Bionic Woman) a few times at a gas station that I used to live near in Oregon.

I fish near Richie Sexon's house all the time and see him frequently on the river.

Thanks...putzjacker

I'm like Mid, I have no use for "famous" people although I've met a few drivers over the years. Pruett, Kendall, Martin and the Man in the Hat.

He's also got a gigantic solar array on his property in Ojai, about 45 minutes from where I carouse.

I met two.

Karl Malden (Streets of SF and AMEX Traveler's checks). His Mercedes SL500 sedan had a flat tire. I was on shift at the Shell station at Victoria avenue and the 101 in Ventura (circa 1979). I got to change it. He didn't use traveler's checks, he paid cash.

Second was Mario Andretti. He was the top promotion name for the Hawaii Gran Prix that was to happen in 1998 at the old Barber's Point Navy Base (I was on Oahu on business). I have an autographed poster by Mario for an event that never occurred. Main sponsor, Pepsi backed out at the last minute.

I aloso thought I would have met Jonathan Winters and Andy Granatelli by now as they live in the area.

SWMBO met Kenny Loggins.

Karl Malden left home without his travellars checks?? hard to believe!

I met Condoleezza Rice when I was working in the membership department of the Palo Alto YMCA. She was still provost at Stanford. It was before GWB was elected, but after she was selected to be in his cabinet. She brought her aunt in to have her added to her membership. I even got her autograph, but it had to go to the bank. :shrug

I also met Michael/Andrew Spence, Nobel prize winner in economics, also at the Y.

Kerri Strug was also a member, though I never met her.

Geez, if i could remember all of the ones i've met or done work for over the years, it would be a long list. Started out at a young age when pop owned his ford dealership outside cincy. He used to loan cars to the ballplayers so met lots of members of the famed "big red machine" of the 70's. Lots of autographed bats/ balls. Being in Nashville now, i've done lots of work for musicians & ballplayers. Done work for dolly parton, jerry reed (was a hoot to be around) faith hill, garth brooks, etc. did alot of work on alan jacksons car collection. Had all the security codes for the gates etc at the mansion he had for sale a while back. Ironically, the last vehicle i worked on for him was a 67 fastback. Spent some time with chip foose & charlie hutton at the nats a couple years back. They sat under our tent in the shade for a while. At work, i was usually sent to do the stuff for the big names as i didnt make a fuss & ask for stuff. Just treated them like everyone else & they seemed to like that. I imagine that life gets tiresome at times. Only met a couple that were real asses.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk. That makes me special!

Met Carroll Shelby and secured autographs on a few items (no charge) while at a chili cookoff in Reno, also met him at Knott's.

Shook hands with Daddy-O Grande, standing next to each other watching a Southern Culture on the Skids show.

Stood a few feet away from Charro at LA airport...had Arnold Schwartzenegger walk within a few feet of me...was within a few feet of Joe Montana twice (gas station and airport in las vegas) but did not have the courage to ask for an autograph. Honked car horn at Jerry Brown (Calif governor) and gave him the bird as he was on the sidewalk nearby on a cell phone but I don't think he saw me.

Forgot about driving Shelby around the show field at the 40th anniversary in Nashville.
