Brush with celebrity?

My boys are doing the Hunter Pence camp again this year. They've been there the last two years.

Great guy (he's really an overgrown kid truth be told) but in the camp they break the kids up into groups by age. They have various instructors (mostly minor league players) teaching different skills at different stations and the kids rotate from one station to the next. Hunter spends all day working in a cage with the kids hitting off a batting tee as each of the different groups rotate through.

At the end of the day, the kiddos get to take an individual picture with Hunter and get his autograph.

Year before last the boys bought Hunter an Astros tree ornament...he seemed impressed that someone thought of him and bought him a present since usually people just want things from him.

Attached is a picture from year before last of Hunter talking with the group my boys were in about batting....super nice guy.

I was a freshman at Ohio State in 1994. Brooks Burris and Nick Sualua(former Cowboys player whose career went bad) were two of my roommates. Orlando Pace(Rams) also lived in the same dorm like all incoming freshman football players. Often time, Brooks and Orlando would tilt the pop machine forward down in the rec room and I would be below catching all the cans as they came tumbling out. Good times.

Back in the mid nineties I was managing a movie theater. One day my cashier calls me up to the front and standing in front of her is Willie nelson and 3 of his bodyguards I guess. He was in the area for a concert. She asked me if we should charge him and I say if they want to come in they pay like everyone else. So they buy their tickets and walk in.
At this point all my employees are now freaking out about it, so Willie asks if anyone wants autographs. Everyone lines up and he starts signing. At the end he looks at me and asks if I want one too. I say no thanks. I'm not that big of a fan so what am I going to do with it. He then went in and sat in a theater and watched his movie.

Somewhere I've got a picture of Willie and my nephew when my nephew was really young...maybe 4 years old. That's been a few years ago since he graduated from college last year, LOL!

Willie was in our area for the Houston Open Pro-am day. My step dad knows Willie from years ago.

My step dad rode bulls professionally for years and way back when he knew Willie when he played in a band at some night club they used to frequent...before Willie got discovered.

I have had a few "close encounters" with celebs. Mostly at airports on on planes.
I once went thru airport security with Sterling Marlin, I was wearing my Mustang Coat that has a bunch of Mustang related patches so the security folks thought I was with the team and I got treated a little better than usual.
I was flying out of Nashville on Southwest a year or so ago and I fly Business Select. I was one of the first in line, while standing there staring into space the pilot walked off the jetway from the plane and some TSA guys too. They all started talking to the guys behind me. I turned around and it was Al Gore and his posse.
I fly with one of the Judds, I think it was the daughter. I fly with a few other country stars but I didn't know who they were because I don't listen to that stuff. The flight attendants were all giddy though.
By far the only time I really "mingled" with a Celeb was with Walter Payton. In Aurora, the town where I was born, there is an old railway "round house". It sat abandoned for most of my life and they even started teraing part of the out building down. The Historical societeity saved it because it's the oldest limestone round house in the US.
Anyway, fast forward to late 90's. Walter Payton bought it and turned it into a Brew Pub, cigar bar, night club and restaurant. My wife loved to go there so it was our date spot. One night we were eating in the restaurant and he was hanging out in the center (where the turn table used to be was now for live bands). We asked our waiter if that was him and he said yes. I brought my wife over and politely apologized for bothering him and asked if we could have his autograph. He asked us to sit down and join him. We sat and talked like we were long lost friends! He entertained us for quite a while. I could not believe how nice he was and genuine. Not long after that, a year or so he passed away. I will always remember how well he treated perfect strangers.

Maybe that was part of reason for his nickname "Sweetness" :bowdown
