C4 or T5?

The tired old C4 that came out of my 66 ragtop will either need to be rebuilt or replaced when my car goes back together. I am contemplating adding a clutch pedal and converting to a T5 instead. Any pros or cons, or other options that I should consider? I really don't want to hack up my sparkly new floorboards if I don't have to. I am planning a MTF console for the interior and not sure what impact modifying the trans tunnel would have on that.

as a funny side note, the car was < 10 years old when it came into our family, it left the factory as an automatic, someone converted it to a 4 speed, then converted it back to automatic in it's short life before it became a part of our family. Now I am thinkiing of putting a clutch back in it.

Do you see extended highway cruises in the car's future? What rear gear do you plan on running? The answers to these two questions will tell you whether you need an overdrive gear in your transmission (I presume this is why the T5). You could also go with an AOD automatic or Gear Venders on the C4 but that one is a pretty pricey move. A T5 doesn't necessitate hacking up the tunnel.

Maybe I should have titled this post 'manual or automatic'. I was thinking T5 because my goal has been to upgrade as many components on the car to modern specs as I can... brakes suspension steering, etc. My brother drives a 66 'survivor' but thats not for me. I figured having the 5th gear would help on the occasional longer trips I would take. At this point I am open to all options. Current 8" rear is 3.00 but thats eventually going to change to something a little more aggressive, probably a year or 2 down the road.

Definitely a T5, its a lot more fun. My car was originally a 3speed when my dad picked it up. He put in a 4 speed, I put in a T5. I tell people my son will put in a 6......

just cruising ? take the C4
cruising and highway ? go for a AOD trans
cruising , highway and occasionaly some action ? go for the T5
IMHO

I am 56, I may have to grow old but I NEVER have to grow up... o there will definately be some 'action'... lol.

Thanks for the input...

60 & a T5z :thu

Keep in mind that if your car was never a manual trans car, you will have a little bit more work to do.

My daughter's 65 has an AOD which she loves.

at some point in it's past life it had a manual trans in it, there is a crude hole punched in the firewall for the clutch linkage, but thats the only evidence left behind, so I'll have a bunch of parts to find to make the conversion. Old Mustang parts are getting harder to find in the junkyards around here so I might be shopping for new.

With a T5, does the shifter line up with the stock hole in the tunnel that my automatic uses? I think it does, but figured I better confirm.

I put a T5 in a 65 and I started with nothing. There was no evidence of it being a manual, but the install was easy. All of the parts are available aftermarket. I started with a used automatic brake hanger and bought a new clutch pedal from Modern Driveline. I also used their hydraulic clutch kit as well as several other parts. The T% fit right into the stock shifter opening.

I think it may depend on the shifter you use, My Pro 5.0 needed a little extra opening IIRC.

Eventually my plans for the interior include a new console from MTF, which is why I was concerned over any trans tunnel mods and the manual shifter location vs the automatic, but I guess I could trim the opening in the console if I need to.

You're 56? How long do you plan on owning/driving the car? Will you feel comfortable driving a stick in 5 years? 10 years? Is you locale flat or hilly? Just some other points to consider.

I have a T5 in the 67 and a TKO in the 65. I took my C4 out of the 65. If it was going to be my daily driver, C4. For a fun car TKO. I am not real fond of the T5 and the TKO only cost me about $500 all said and done more.

I put a T5 in my 68 that was originally a C4 and everything lined up perfectly with the original shifter. Didn't ever drive it on the road before getting rid of it but the same engine trans combo is getting ready to go into my 65 now and I plan on enjoying this one.

talked to Modern Driveline on Friday, they were extremely helpful. My current gearing is too high to efficiently run a T5, so I need to factor in new gears to the overall cost. now the question becomes do I change the gears in my 8" rear end or step up to 8.8 or 9.

Becoming a bad case of one thing leading to another... but what else is new... lol.

anybody know anything about this setup?

While 3.55 to 4.11 would be more ideal, and a great choice, I don't think your 3.00s are unreasonable. Mustangs came from the factory with T5s and 2.73 or 3.08 gearing for years.
