I think we could only fit about 1/2 a quarter in the converter but figured as long as we got something in there for initial start up we should be cool.

I started adding fluid to mine last night and after about 4 quarts the dipstick was registering well over full. My guess is it will need more after I start it up but it seemed like it should hold more than four quarts before reading "over fill"?

I also need to throw a couple of gas cans in the Explorer and hit the gas station for five or ten gallons. Mustang is pretty low since some dummy forgot to fill it up last time they drove it and I am guessing I am going to have to let it sit at idle a good deal when I first get it started.

I am hoping to start it up today. Last night I couldn't find an 11/16 deep socket so I have to swing by Sears today and pick one up...need it to tighten down the exhaust pipe to the manifold. I also need to bolt the neutral safety switch back on but I am basically done.
 
That sounds about right. Once you start it and it fills up the torque converter and all of the passages, you'll be adding quite a bit more. It's been a little bit since we done this, but it didn't take too long idling initially. IIRC, we quickly hit all the gears, and then turned it off and checked the level. And added several more quarts.

That's what I was thinking of doing. Getting it running and then switch from one gear to the next and shutting her back off.

Probably going to be a pita to get started however since it hasn't run in two weeks. When I've been driving it some it fires right up but when it's been sitting, well it's a tad "cold natured" at first.
 
Rob is right. You need to shift it through the gears a few times, then re-fill the case. All you've done so far is fill the pan. The torque converter holds more than the pan does.

You'll add 8-10 quarts into a bone dry C4.
 
C4 fill/start procedure on race car:

One quart of oil in converter. Allow to settle into converter spaces. Install converter. Pump is pre-primed with STP.

Four quarts of oil in pan (deep pan)

Car raised and level on cradle, lift or jackstands

Start engine, run transmission through gears, return to neutral or park. If no rear wheel motion, check and add oil until rear wheels rotate.

With engine running, check fluid level and add fluid until registering full. Run through gears again, re-check and add fluid as appropriate. When registering near full (in neutral), engage low gear, lock brake and run engine to 4000 rpm for ten seconds to build heat and check functions, then recheck and adjust fluid level. Check for leaks. Road test.
 
Got it all installed and even took it around the block after the whole deal of run, turn off, add fluid run again to check fluid, etc.

I do have an issue though and not sure what's causing it.

Seems to run fine. Shifts fine, etc.

The only issue is when I got it home and back in the garage.

If I put it in park I can roll the car by pushing it like it's in neutral...any idea what's causing this?

Either the parking pawl is not engaging, or your shift linkage isn't quite right. Obviously, try re-adjusting the shift linkage first before pulling the pan.

I know I thought I had it set right last night...of course it was about midnight but earlier today when it was in park it thought it was in neutral and reverse on the shifter was really putting it in drive.

I shut it off and readjusted the linkage and the neutral safety switch. Each gear now seems to match up on the shifter. With it in park would it be worth it to push further towards the rear of the car and then re-tighten the linkage?

Is there an adjustment that can be made to the parking pawl if the linkage seems fine?
 
With everything adjusted properly, a car will roll a bit in one direction or another until the pawl drops into position for park. It should not move but a couple inches.
 
I hear ya..only earlier I could move it a measure of feet.

I put it up on stands and screwed around with the shift linkage some and it seems to be working now.
