Calling all StangFix'ers!

I've got a local Mustang buddy who's in a pinch and needs help locating a part quickly. MBII attendee's would know him, it's John with the Yellow Coupe.

His '66 Steering Gearbox crapped out on him and he needs a quick replacement. Non-Power Steering car, 19:1 ratio, 41" steering shaft.

I had him call Randy at StangerSite, but Randy can't get to it until June. John has the broken gearbox removed and is anxious to get the car back on the road with as little down tome as possible.

He's not a computer/forum guy, but I told him I'd see what I could do. I haven't had a chance yet to scan eBay, but figured I'd throw it out here first. If you've got one laying around in working condition, chime in!

Thanks!

I've got one. Has the 6 cyl Pitman arm on, but if he doesn't mind changing that out, it's his.

Quick note to add: It's an old stocker, never rebuilt...not sure if he'll love it. It has a little bit of wander in it, but I've driven worse. Even if it's crappy though, he can have it fast, and it'll tide him over til Randy can get him a rebuilt unit. And can't beat the price. (Just help out on shipping the heavy bastid)

Sold!

Please PM me your phone number so we can get the ball rolling on shipping. Just so we're clear.... the 41" long steering shaft is still connected to the steering gearbox... right? It's going to be an oddly shaped box, that's for sure.

Thanks Steve!

Yep, long shaft...my wife will be excited to see it gone. It's one of those parts I flatly refused to throw away, no matter how unwieldy. I'll PM my phone number after this meeting I'm about to walk into.

I have one out of my 67. It is an early car so it is the same as my 66 had. I don't know the ratio or any details about it. Just it is good and what it came out of.

Good job Steve.

Yep, thanks again Steve. I just got off the phone with John and he's amazed that the community reacted so quickly (and generously) and is excited knowing that his car will be going back together in short order.

Mel, thanks for the offer, but it appears that Steve has it covered..... and he's just down the road from in us in ATL.

Awesome,
I know someone who had one and was going to call him but very glad Steve took care of it already.

Dave,
If the one from Steve falls through, let me know. I've got one out in the shop that I never installed when I swapped to manual steering. And it's doubtful I'll ever run it since I'm going to probably the TCP rack.

Me too!

I can enumerate how much great stuff I've got from this forum. Freebies, good deals on stuff, and best of all, lots and lots of information. To be able to help someone else out, AND get that giant thing out of my garage? Total win for me too :ecit

Steve

Again, thanks everyone for the offers of support. Steve's phone number has been passed over to my buddy John so that they can work out the shipping arrangements.

When I bought my disassembled '66 I said the same thing. No thanks, going to a rack, don't need the gearbox that you've removed from the car.

.... Months later after installing the new R&P I went to install the steering column and said to myself "WTF? Where's the steering shaft????" Duh, it's right where you left it at the previous owners house because you said you didn't need it. Long story short I had to find a trashed gearbox that someone was willing to cut the shaft from and mail to me.

Nice job guys! Way to go! Moments like these make this community even more special than it already is.

Dave just to give John one other option, since I'm putting an r&p in it, he's welcome to the one out of my coupe. It too has a 6cyl pitman arm on it, but it feels tight.

I know Steve has already offered his up (I just found this post tonight!). I can pull it Friday or Saturday and if ya'll want to meet me in Myrtle Beach Sunday, I can drive it up. That would save his shipping costs and expedite him getting it. Just let me know!

Thanks John. I'm out of the loop on the deal at this point. I gave my buddy John Steve's phone number and assume that they're arranging shipping. I'll let you know if something doesn't work out.
