do you clear coat your aluminum water pump?

It is standard procedure to paint/clear coat your "natural" aluminum water pump with high-temp satin clear or even gloss clear coat to keep it looking clean?

Thanks.

Never tried. I'm interested in finding out. I've heard that normal clear coat will yellow with age due to the heat. No first hand experience, just hearsay.

Maybe you can get some info by VHT who sells spraycans for high temp applications.
I know that you first have to prime and then coat the exhaust manifolds to the desire color.Maybe you can do this for a waterpump too.

Nope, left mine bare. It would prevent stains if you clear coated it but I too worried about it yellowing from age and heat.

Here's a trick. Don't drive you car!!! That'll preserve your water pump's looks :craz

there's an extensive discussion on this on a certain vintage mustang forum that i followed.
my favorite quote from that thread was:
"even as i sit here, my (intake manifold) is turning a nice shade of urine"
obviously the same is true for water pumps.
i tried several shades of "aluminum" paint on a spare manifold to try and go a different direction, but nothing ever looked natural.
i ended up not clear coating or painting them at all.
and if I get a little gas or oil stain, it cleans up great with brake cleaner.

Jeez thanks, really helpful. I like driving my green car, not using it for storage like yours. :vic

65 GT that I had, painted it black along with the engine. Do not believe they were left bare. Anyway, the one I had was an original and it definitely looked better painted black. Not fond of bare aluminum. Guess am one of those of' farts that would paint aluminum heads also. Kind of hurts the show and tell factor, though.
