Drove in my First Autocross

Hey guys how's it going! Well I've been out of the mustang game lately. I sort of lost interest for awhile. But after Saturday, well, lets just say it has been rekindled. I've always wanted to drive the 66 in SCCA autocross events, and over the years I built it with that in mind.

I always had it in my mind that the car wasn't good enough to participate, let alone compete.

Anyway, a friend of mine from work told me about the autocross school the local SCCA clubs was putting on and I decided to finally give it a try. The car did fantastic, better than my expectations. In fact the only problem was a little bit of fluid puking and that was due to my overfilling them.

My wife was nice enough to come spectate, and while she did she took some video. So I thought I would share. It's pretty repetative but (for me) fun to see.

Anyway, needless to say I'm pooping my pants with anticipation for the next time I can go, and also plans for some further upgrades are already running through my mind. That '86 5.0 engine I've had in the garage might just have to come out for a stroker build!

Autocross Day - Angelo

Angelo, that looks like a ton of fun. I should get my 65 down there and do some running too. Are you ready for a manual trans yet?

I wonder how my TKO will do?

I am green with envy. You need to call me and tell me all about it and how to get involved. I have to drive down to my Brother's old house and do some repairs for my Mom who lives there now.

It was surprisingly easy and not all too expensive. I imagine if it becomes a habit that tire expense would become an issue. Fortunes need to be made/spent on those things.

I'll go again after the beginning of the year when they set up some practice days. I'd also like to go when a class with more classics (I was the only one the day I went) would be there.

Angelo, that is so cool. Glad to see you're back. Maybe you should organize an Autocross in the parking lot of Knotts this coming Spring?

:lol

I went to the local website and saw there is a group in Vegas. 2 hours from me. I read the rules and talked to SWMBO, Maybe race both cars one with her driving and one with me.

She said that it sounded like fun.

Wow, I am excited to get to work on the car again....

That's pretty cooool, can't wait to try one. In the beginning of the video it looked like a guy ran right across in front of your car, what was that?
It looks like you got a little faster each lap which is great without spinning out.
Give us the rundown on your mods to the car so far suspension and frame strengthening wise. Do you have MC bar, roller perches, what size front sway bar, running a rear swaybar? etc.

It DOES look like I almost hit that guy! Hah! Well I promise it wasn't even close. He had easily 6" of clearance. It must have been the angle of the camera, because he was clear well before I got near.

As far as the setup, I actually did a pretty thorough write-up of what I have done to my front suspension way back on the VMF. Here's a link to the webpage I made.

I also did a shelby style front suspension drop.

The engine is stock 289 underneath. I rebuilt everything from the cam up using the stock heads (man I wish I would have at least ported them) and it makes about 215 rwhp. I would like to get that to about 350 rwhp eventually.

I do not have a sway bar on the back, but I did replace the old leaf springs with new ones a couple of years ago. I actually like the rear of the car to be a little loose at the moment. The lower horsepower doesn't let it break away too awful right now anyway, plus I'm still an autocrossing noob.

Hope that helps.

Sick. I want to get into my local (Sacramento) races next season. What city are you in and what type of stuff did they show you?

It looks like fun.
