Electric Choke Question

Member
I ran a #16 wire from rear post on the ignition switch to the electric choke and the jacket on the wire melted when I started the car.

I did have the lead hooked up to the STA post on the alternator but, my friend that was helping me said to hook it to the ignition instead.

Did I use too small of gauge of wire or is there something else that might be going on?

Something else happened...I'd check to ensure that the point you attached to on the choke/carb is not ground by using a digital volt-ohm meter.

The STA post is preferred, because the rear post is hot whenever the key is in the RUN position even if the car is not running. The STA post can only be hot when the alternator is turning.
